Bloggers Beware!!!!!

You all know that
this blog is usually
full of smiles..
a place to get your
morning chuckle.

However,
today I want to warn you
about something that happened to
me on Friday.

Friday was a bad day.
A very bad day.
Such a day I had...
It was very bad.

So....
After  kind of a weird day,
I started to do my rounds
of visiting blogs.

I have two or three blogs
that I don't visit anymore
because my computer flashes
a warning that if I continue
on  my computer
will
SLOW DOWN
or there might be
a hidden problem there.

I am stupid.
There is one blog that I
particularly enjoy visiting
that ALWAYS gives me
that warning.
Friday I opened that blog.

I am not going to mention
the blog because I am sure
there are others that visit
and have NO PROBLEM there.

Within seconds I had a
flash that my computer was
in danger.
As I tried to close out of the
blog my computer screen
flashed up with an
Anti-Virus program
(which is apparently a semi-virus
in itself)
and I was not able to do anything.

Nothing!
NaDa!

MyHero's friend was visiting
and he is a computer "geek"
Sorry Mikey...
You KNOW you're a geek...
but a good geek.

He had to strip everything
off my computer and reset it
to factory settings.
No going back to 3 or 4 days ago
and resetting.
It got me good.
This took place even with
Norton anti-virus running.
Scary, huh?

Now, I was able to save
most of my pictures
but my documents were lost.
My favorites were lost.
I felt lost.

Then, I remembered that
DebbieDoo had talked about
backing things up back in November.
I had finally gotten a thumb drive
and backed my computer up on it
on November 11th.
All my documents from that
point forward are gone.
Gone!
Gone for good!
Recipes,
Stories,
Orders I had placed,
Legal Documents.
Gone!

I called MamasBoy.
Being the type of "boy" he is
he left his poor wife at home
and rushed to my house to
reinstall some of the extras.
He found all my documents.
He hooked me up to my
scanner/printer.
He saved the day!
I can't imagine how many
loaves of
Banana Bread
and how many
Bacon Bits
this is going to cost me....
mighta been cheaper to
call the
Geek Squad~!
ANYWAY
Beware folks...
Don't go to places that
SHOULD BE SAFE
if you get any type of
warning.
Don't open any links you
aren't familar with...
It's a scary,
wormy,
Trojan laden,
Viral world out there.

I have learned my lesson.
I am backing up once a week..
maybe more often.

I hope your Friday
was a whole lot
better than mine.

Come back tomorrow
for
The Scoop On Poop-
It'll give you a smile!

So glad you got it sorted. So frustrating. I've come across a few blogs over the last few weeks that have given me warning messages.

Cheers,

I see you are up early this Sunday morning! I couldn't sleep as I have a cold. Thought I would scan the blogs for a little while to get sleepy again.

My foot is healing nicely and hope to be back at my projects soon! I hope you and the family are well. Love the pictures of that new little addition!

That is scary with those viruses. Luckily my son purchased an external hard drive for us to save everything instead of on the computer. Those kids know everything!

Take care!

I am so glad you were able to salvage some things. And how wonderful that you know some GEEKS... back up back up back up! I always say I will, but I have ignored my alerts for 2 weeks. Now I will NOT do that today!
Good luck with your foot...have a happier day today!

Oh, I so resonate with this situation! It has happened to me at least three times in the past while searching. No warnings though. The instant I would click a particular link it would happen. It took John hours to pinpoint the malware and correct it. So frustrating and time consuming!

Happy to hear your computer is fixed now!

Wow that stinks big time!!! Almost as bad as me discovering this morning that someone has copied my entire blog and posted it as their own!!! Can you imagine! As much as I love the computer and couldn't live without it, saying its scary is an understatment. You really have to have your guard up all the time (so not who I am) and be very vigilant. Sorry that you went through that but soo happy your friends saved the day!!
Glad its better and heres to a nice calm, peaceful day!

Diana, let me tell you of a site that is worth every penny. Use carbonite.com. I found out about this site when reading Kate's blog Centsational Girl a while back. Her hard drive had crashed and she said she wasn't worried at all because she knew all her stuff was stored at carbonite.com. I immediately went to the site and purchased it. It keeps you backed up 24 hours a day. It is around $59 a year and worth the peace of mind. Debbiedoos bought it too after losing her whole blog one morning and then a few hours later it was back, but she was freaked out for a while. No more freaking out with carbonite.com.

oh my gosh, is my blog one of them, I know I have two blogs I no longer go to for the same reason, I noticed you don't visit mine anymore, is that why, I already lost mine once,I sure would like to know if it is, so sorry if it is this thats happening, I'm almost ready to stop this blogging!!

I have also found warnings when visiting some blogs of bloggers who have commented on my blog. One of them locked me into a loop of warnings about running a script of some sort, and I had to use my Task Manager to kill the site. I wrote the blogger to tell her about it, and nothing was done ... I know because I unknowingly clicked on her again a few weeks later, and the same thing happened.

Back-ups are your friend, and I'm considering Kim's suggestion of using Carbonite for mine. My husband does mine manually once a month, but the peace of mind of having my data backed up more frequently, and without having to lift a finger, sounds pretty good.

I'm sorry about all the computer stress, but really glad that everything turned out ok in the end.

Sharon @ Elizabeth & Co. said...

Oh gosh Diana, that is not fun! A few of my favorites sites give me those pop-up warnings too. The thought of losing every totally freaks me out! Thanks for the warning!

Diana, Is there a way you can let the person know. They may not know what's up with their own computer. I would not. If this computer blows up...I would just have to get a new one and start over...as I am a mushroom in the computer world. No kidding. I long for a geek to befriend me:):) smiles, Susie (She Junks)

Hi Diana! I haven't had any trouble or scary warnings...YET! What's scary is that we both have Norton but it happened anyway, that's what scary I think, I'd somehow report this to Norton and see what they say.
Charles is adorable and boy, has he grown,
Loved sweetcheeks whisteling belly so cute!

That is a bad morning! My heart goes out to you. I'm glad you got it all sorted out and not too much was lost! I'm obsessive about backing up files, especially photos, and that is exactly why. I don't blog surf much so I haven't came across any warnings yet but I fear someday I will.

I hate these kind of problems. I'm not really great at anything computer related so when stuff like this happens, it's traumatic for me. I'm glad you have a couple of handy geeks to help you out.

Happy Sunday!

Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions said...

I had that happen once, too, Diana! My hubby got it rectified but I have gotten lax about the backing up. I need to be more on top of that ~ starting today! Have you emailed the person about this? If it happens often, it might be something on her end within the blog.

Well Drats! Isn't it always something!

Thank you for sharing with us girlfriend. Peace and PROTECTION from hear on out!

Oh, I hate that when that happens! If it should ever happen again- shut down the pc and unplug the phone line. Shut it down- and wait for a geek. Every second is more death to the pc files.
You are so lucky you had someone right there! Glad you are back on so quick!
Can't wait for the poop story.

Karen thisoldhouse2.com said...

HATE when that happens!! Does my blog do that?

Nellie said...

I believe I would have just been in tears! How wonderful that you had someone who could come and help restore your system. I'll gladly help with the banana bread and bacon bits.:-)
My Friday was really great, with high score at bridge, success in finding fabric for my dress for a daughter's wedding in March, and a couple of hours out with the Man of the House dancing in the evening. This was exceptional - not a routine Friday.
Have a great Sunday!

That's so scary, Diana. I'm so sorry that happened. Thanks for the warning.

That's a horror story for sure!
I've not experienced anything like you've described
but would sure want to know if my blog was giving
anyone problems. Glad things are better for you now!!!!

Cindy Adkins said...

Wow - that IS scary! Thank you for sharing it with us, though. I need to start backing up!! So glad you got things worked out..nice to have a "geek" close by (which I don't!!) Yikes! I won't go clicking on any strange pop-ups or links. Thanks!

I am sending you a great big HUG, Diana.
I pray it was not my blog but I believe you would tell me if my computer was creating such havoc. I am soooo very thankful you had people there who could help you. I would be up the icey creek looking for a frozen stick for a paddle but great photo ops if I had not dropped my camera in the icey creek...lol...just trying to get a smile for you.
HAPPY 2012 FOR YOU DIANA AND YOUR FAMILY...INCLUDING THE LITTLE TYKE WHO HASN'T MADE HIS WAY OUT YET.
Sweet Cheeks...oh my Sweet Cheeks..."one ringy dingy"...lol...Your right about Lily Tomlin...love her.
Charles in charge has really grown...soooo very precious.
You are such a wonderful grandma.
I was going to tell you...I collect candy boxes and put tags and lace in them...when I was a little girl...the girl that lived next door, father's was a lawyer...so they only lived next to us for about 2 years....she had a little whitman sampler box that she kept her Barbie shoes in...I didn't even own a Barbie but I loved the colors of all the shoes in the candy box. It is the only thing I ever wanted that someone else had...that is when my love of candy boxes started...silly isn't it and that girl went on to beat me as cheerleader.
I still don't have that whitman sampler box and every time I walk past the candy in the store I would tell either my husband or one of the children about it. I know they are tired of hearing the story...lol..I just thought that might distract you.
Talk to you soon
hugs

OMGosh. I think this is what happened to my computer. I don't remember any warnings. But I got a notice that I had like 2o some viruses and the notice was to buy virus protection.....except the whole computer blocked up You couldn't get around that notice. I thought it just crashed. Can you tell me in more detail what they did to fix it. I think my husband took it to his computer guy but I can tell him what you did. Also please et that person know so that it doesn't happen to more people. I still have all my information on my new computer. I guess in that way I am lucky.

Marti said...

I learned the hard way to use an external back up. I had backed stuff up to an internal drive, but I had a major crash, and couldn't access it. Now my computer automatically backs up every day to the external drive. I have so many wonderful things that I would hate to loose.

Tina@WhatWeKeep said...

Geez, Diana! I'm freaked out that Norton didn't catch it. Will alert my geek immediately. Glad you had help so quickly.
Hang in there.
Hugs, T.

Diana
I had this same thing happen every time I visited a particular persons site, so I gave up on it. I'm so glad I did now.
Thanks for the warning!
You are lucky to have a son and a friend that can help re-establish your files. I would be 'up a creek without a paddle" if it happened to me!

Oh my goodness, Diana. What a nightmare. That is awful. Have you been able to email the person to let them know there's a problem? They might not even know. When blogger was having all kinds of problems I took my computer to the Geek Squad to make sure I didn't have a virus and thankfully my computer was fine. Yes, I back up too and I'm glad you reminded me because I haven't done so in a few days. I'm off to do it now on my external hard drive. Thanks!!!

Donna said...

Hi Diana,

I, too, am guilty of this and my sweetie has been on me for a long time. He just loaded my new computer and he wants a back up weekly! Been there, lost stuff a few years back, so I pray you didn't loose too much, Diana. I hope also, that who ever is popping up with these "danger signs" you are telling them, I would want to know for sure!

Thanks for the reminder to back up, and do it often!

Blessings,
Donna

OMG! That is frightening. Knock on my wooden head, I haven't had that happen to me yet. I use a Mac and my son the Mac guru says there aren't enough of us around to care about. Whatever works.

Love to you,

Very scary, Diana. I have backed up my computer once and I forgot how to do it. Someone recommended every two weeks. This hasn't happened to me but one of these days the ball is going to drop! Thanks so much

You did have a bad day! Poor thing.
I've been there and done that.
It's a total nightmare. My hubby bought me a new computer, Norton Anti-Virus and an external hard drive for my birthday. I've had no trouble since then (knock on wood).
Having an online business.... without my computer I become disabled. You can hardly go anywhere safely these days.

Oh my! I'm so sorry, Diana! I've had this happen once and then other's were talking about the same blog. That's terrible! I'm sorry you're dealing with this! I have to be more careful! Thanks!

Oh my gosh, I would have totally panicked! Now I know that I need to get one of those thumb drives for sure! John was talking today about getting one, and I thought we'd never use it. Thanks for the great tip, and glad you got out of a jam, how scary!!!
