Valentine's Day History
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day.
Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine,
a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity.
He died on February 14, 269 A.D.,
the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.
Legend also says that St. Valentine
left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter,
who had become his friend,
and signed it "From Your Valentine".
It inspired me tonight to write this poem.....
The Legend of St. Valentine
I have languished long in this prison cold,
Where it is dank and reeks of mold.
I have whispered your name to God above
and am thoroughly besotted with this love,
A love that will never be recieved,
A love that can never be achieved,
A love that cries its mournful tune.
As I gaze through the bars at the far away moon.
I will never hold your hand in mine.
Nor sit at a table and watch you dine.
I have chosen my path, and sealed my fate,
When I took an oath by the old oak gate
To stand up for God, my chosen King,
And renounced the heathen with the golden ring.
I have asked for nothing, my sweet miss,
Except for the chance to steal a kiss.
For a kiss from you would surely be,
The only earthly pleasure left for me.
A kiss to send me on my way,
To the guillotine on
Judgement Day.
Be brave, dear heart, when I pass by,
And know that I will be standing nigh,
And waiting for you by Heaven's shore,
When life has cast you past Earth's Door.
Goodbye my dear,
You will be fine
for you've been well loved
by your Valentine.

The story of a martyr is always one of great courage and the poem puts that in a whole new aspect. The martyr must gather his courage from love.... the strongest of human emotion.
Have you ever read Fox's book of Martyr's? It has amazing stories of people who died for their faith.
And compared to the martyrs of the past and our contries forefathers, I sometimes wonder if we're not a nation of wimps, now. Do you know anyone with that kind of courage and that kind of love?
Happy Valentine's Day to you!
Great image and you nailed the poem!
