Salad?
What does that bring to mind?
Greens? Tomatoes? Onions?
Well, folks, this will forever alter your vision of SALAD!

Lulu decided it would be great fun to make
PRETZEL SALAD
After crushing the ONLY PRETZELS I had in the house
(this is important later in the story)
we put them in the oven at the recommended temperature
and set the timer.
After about 4 minutes (out of 10)
I smelled something burning.
Uh-Oh
Ummmm...Remember this was the LAST of the pretzels!
Too late to turn back now because the other part of the
SALAD is already done.
Well, that means I have to take a trip to the store-
10 miles and 30 minutes later we are ready
to try it again.
Ummm...this time we leave the crust in less time
and then have to let it cool.
However,
By now the Jello has "set up" and doesn't
want to spread over the cream cheese mixture.
Now it looks like CRAP this!
And it served up like THIS.
Ummmm.NOT pretty.
I'll tell you a secret.
Want to know why the crust burned?
Ummmm...Wellllllll....
Remember how I was bragging on my great
double oven the other day?
I had used the top oven to broil something
for the kids
BEFORE we started the SALAD.
I set the LOWER oven to bake the pretzel crust.
GUESS WHICH oven I put the crust in?
Uh-huh-UPPER OVEN! TWICE.!!
Hey- I never said I was a SMART cook.
I just like to eat!
SweetCheeks says-
Pass the spatula!
She loves the
SALAD DRESSING!
By the way- I have made this before
and it is DELICIOUS!
I'll be around late today-
I am meeting my daughter for a
fun day with kids and lunch
between my house and hers.

I love that salad. Chocolate Garden in Dallas serves the most delicious one.
That is a good salad, reminds me that I haven't made it in awhile and should make it again this weekend. This post made me laugh, I am not the only cook that makes mistakes! Sweet Cheeks has the right idea, lick the spoon!
This is a popular dessert at our church "potluck" suppers.
I've done that so many times...putting things in the wrong oven/temp. Glad I'm not alone!
Have a nice outing.
LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one that does things like this!! It looks good even if it wasn't picture perfect!
Hi Diana,
I have made that salad and it never comes out for me so my sister in law does this salad and it comes out great so I put her in charge of making this each holiday. It is so yummy. Sweet Cheeks toooooo adorable.
Kris
Definitely something to add to the list to try. Love your cooking adventures. I often have good intentions for recipes that don't quite turn out as planned. Sweetcheeks makes the perfect little chef.
This is one of my family's favorites, we all love it, so yummy!
I still think it looks good!... xoxo Julie Marie
I have actually made this delicious stuff! But I have a hard time thinking of it as salad, which I associate with greens. I think my little local church recipe book calls it Pretzel dessert. :-) Must be a regional thing.
I have eaten this salad several times before and it is delicious. I bet your second one tasted good anyway.
I've never made that salad before, but I've looked over the recipe several times. Perhaps I will try it soon. It really does look tasty! xo Nellie
That's when you rename it "Dump Salad", Diana! : ) I made a Cherry Dump Cake a few months ago and it looks messy but tastes delicious.
Haha...you make me smile, sweet Diana! Personally, this "salad" is way more like dessert to me, but I love it - it's so yummy :) Hugs to you!
I have made that exact strawberry pretzel salad several times. It is one of my all time favorites! It's so pretty too. I found the recipe in Paula Deen's magazine years ago.
LOL...you are such a good Nana. It sounds delish!
Okay.... I am no longer envious of your double oven. As scatterbrained as I sometimes am, I'd put stuff in the bottom that is supposed to go in the top and put things in the top that is supposed to go in the bottom and mess everything up. I'd better stick with one simple little oven and learn to be happy! LOL
Don't feel bad, Diana...one year I set the wrong oven for the Thanksgiving turkey! Good thing we had a ham, too...
I hope you have a great day with the girls! That salad looks great. THat sounds like something I'd do...use the wrong oven, LOL! Oh, dear.....
Good Morning Diana, I had to chuckle this morning. We have all been in the same boat. I like sweetcheeks answer just lick the spatula. I hope you have a wonderful time with your family today. It is always fun with the grandchildren regardless of what you do. I would call it a pretzel dessert. Have a wonderful day. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend.
No holiday is complete without pretzel salad in my family! Love that stuff and the holidays are right around the corner which means more pretzel salad in my future! Glad it turned out, even if it doesn't look pretty, it still tastes good!

I've had that salad before and I love it. However, I never seem to remember to make it lol. The girls looked like they were having lots of fun with Nana Diana.
Have a happy day.
Mary
I've never heard of pretzel salad before, but it sure looks tasty!
Sounds like every day in my kitchen! Fun story...you certainly are tenacious...ten miles and thirty minutes later...
This is a yummy and easy dessert. You are such a wonderful Nana, always having your sweet Granddaughter with you. Things do happen.....It doesn't have to be pretty to taste good. Double ovens are great! xo Linda
Diana, At least your oven is working. Waaaa, I have had trouble the last two times I used mine...I am in a big old funk..I use my oven lots in winter...debating to get new stove or go for repairs. Secretly I hate this stove. The stove I had before this one was over 30 years old, I should never have bought a new one. The salad looked good anyway. I bet it tasted good. xoxo,Susie
Well, that is one interesting looking salad!
I have enjoyed that salad at pot luck dinners, very good. I'm so sorry that you had to start over . . . but Sweet Cheeks did a beautiful job on her salad:)
Keep smiling,
Your blogging sister, Connie :)
That does sound good, I think my hubby would like it. I love working in the kitchen with my granddaughters, it's one of the most special things that I know of.
Enjoy your dessert or did you say it was salad?
Hugs, Cindy
Hi Diana, I just read this post and yesterday's and now am going to be paranoid about using the word "cute" for fear you were talking about me. So I love your grands creativity! Not sure about the salad but if she likes it and eats it, it works. I laughed that you put the pretzels in the oven under the broiler-sounds like something I would do.
Have a great evening.
Hugs,Noreen
I've never heard of this - sounds good though!!!
You're just too funny Diana - and that's something I would completely do with the ovens !
XOXO
Looks pretty darn good to me. Tell Sweet Cheeks I always think everything tastes better on a spatula!!
Oh yum, yum, yum! That is one of my most favorite salads for Summer. It's that whole salty sweet combo that I love.
OMG..I love that salad..I could seriously eat the whole dish all by myself..:)
LOVE it! Now you've made me want to make one too. :)
xo

Goodness, this salad brings back memories of church potlucks! I remember the first time I ate pretzel salad... soooo good! Your's looks pretty on my computer.
Sounds yummy! I have to give this a try!I think it looks yummy too! I have done the same thing! I put a cake, on a plastic plate, in the oven and forgot it was in there and turned it on the pre-heat for something else! Disaster! Melted plastic!
Oops! At least you're persistent and tried again...and I'm sure it was delicious! Haven't had this in ages, but I know I really liked it :)
Susan
Diana this salad is so good. I remember this one from many a potluck. I sure it was enjoyed even with the mishap.
Hope your day out was fun.
Hugs!
I love the pretzel salad...and I am pretty sure I have all the ingredients on hand. What a bummer the burnt pretzel...that's the price to pay for having a nice working oven. lol
That's funny that you should finally post this AFTER! I write a blog post begging if anyone knew the recipe last year...sigh. LOL.
My favorite Jello salad hands down.
Now if anyone knows the recipe for those cornflake, chocolate, coconut no bake cookies from my childhood...
Jen
it looks spoon lickin' good even if it's a little mashed up. I've not heard of this type salad before since I live in a cave but I'm going to try and get out more and check this recipe out! Hope you had a fun girlie day.
The results are what I call a goo ball. Never pretty, but always delicious.
xo Laura
Doesn't matter how it looks - it's how it tastes and it looks like it tasted pretty good! the important part was spending time with the little darlings.
I haven't had pretzel salad in years....loved it then and if I ever make it again I will love it now. That is such a pain when you live far from the grocery store. I loved living in the country but it is so convenient now living in town....too convenient????
This is one of my favorite recipes! I can only make it to take to a party or a potluck dinner; if I make it for our family, I end up eating it ALL myself! :)
I made this a couple of years ago and oh was it good! We ended up eating the leftovers as dessert for a week. I love it that the girls like to cook with you!
I've never heard of pretzel salad, but it does look sort of good. Although, do you remember in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation when the old lady made a jello salad and it was crunchy (kitty food)? That's where my mind immediately went :)
This sounds so familiar...I pride myself as a great cook and baker yet every time I went to my daughters house I would burn food in her oven....it took me a couple of years to realize that when you set the temp on her oven the broiler feature would turn on to more rapidly get to the temperature you set it for....and I would always put in the food before waiting for it to pre-heat...So I ended up broiling every thing...or like you...burning everything..
Hey I have had that before and believe you me I bet that was good - just because it didn't serve correctly - I love sweet and salty like that - and your granddaughter helping is the best.
My favorite salad (burnt or not) lol What a fun day you must have had!!
Gert
This looks so delish! I am pretty sure I pinned this on Pinterest in my recipes.
