An Ice Rink In Our Back Yard

MyHero loves to putter
on the ice.
He has been making an
ICE RINK
for the kids most winters
since we have lived on
the bay.
It is quite a trek down
to the water edge so this year
he decided to flood part
of our backyard.
Isn't it beautiful?
Oh- Wait! That is
NOT OUR RINK.
But...look at this...
Oh- Well, This is
NOT OUR RINK either.

Here is a little picture history of
OUR RINK.
New Year's Eve Day:
My Hero-plowing the area to
make the banks.
Go-MyHero-Go

Um....okay......

Well, it IS looking rink-shaped,
do you know what we do next?

We ADD WATER!
The bigger picture
And let water run all night long.
New Year's Day...
Is it RINK Yet?
Do you see it?
There it is!
ICE!
(In the far right corner)
Ummmm...I am thinking by
the end of February
we can use these!
If not-just so you know-
There is FUDGE cooling
on the back porch
Help yourself!
More Ice Rink Adventures
to follow.
I HOPE

Our husbands are kindred spirits with their ice rink construction projects. You have a bit more snow around your backyard ice rink.

Give him a big bucket, he can dip water from the bay, after he chips ice away, of course.

I could send you some more snow to help that rink along, I have a bit extra here!

That is so much fun, Diana! I used to love ice skating when I was a teen. I can just see many happy moments with your family skating around your home made rink!

Susie said...

So funny Diana. Maybe hero needs a tarp , to help hold the water till it freezes. But I like that idea , rather than ever allowing the children near the lake. Fudge is a nasty word around here. LOL.xox,Susie

Can't ice skate Diana but I sure would like a piece of your fudge:)

I never could ice skate. I couldn't stand up on the skates. But I do remember walking to the outdoor rinks. It was fun. I was outside so much when I was little.
I think there is a missing part to the rink.......
Yes, we are alike when it comes to family.....well and alot of other things. Hah.

Kim @ Savvy Southern Style said...

That is so cool that you can make a home made rink. I would kill myself trying to ice skate though.

Who knew? That is so awesome, Diana!!! Wish I could "steal" some of that fudge! Yum. xo

So fun! We used to make a rink like that for our kids when they were young. They had a blast, especially watching the winter Olympics and then going out and skating on their own backyard rink. We could have started one a couple days ago when it was -14 degrees here.

My ONLY experience with ice skating was 8 years ago...concussion and trip to the ER. That was my first and my last :) Looking pretty though...not me, the ice rink

Lynne said...

I have hung up my skates and taken up inner tubing!

I hope it works out for Your Hero and the kids!

How fun!

I love that!! I've never ice skated before but having my very own rink in my own backyard would be awesome! I'm thinking my boys on the other hand, taking the sled and shooting each other across the ice instead. ;)
p.s. I'll email you my address so you can send me some fudge... YUM! Sounds good with my hot cup of coffee right now!

Hey girl, Great idea that your grands will love. It is cold enough to snow here but none in sight; I just want to stay inside.
Have a great day my friend.

That is so sweet of your Hero to make an ice rink for the kids! I don't do ice, but I DO do fudge!!!

Your hero is a genius!!! I hope the kiddos can wait to skate until February. :)
SO funny. We are wearing shorts/sunscreen here and working in the yard. No ice or snow to be found. Only green and sunshine. Ughhhh. Do you hate me yet?
XOXO

My format was chosen from the simple category and then I customized it. I always enlarge the photos and text. Ice skating is for the younger generation.

Oh how I would love an ice skating rink in my back yard! I enjoy seeing pictures of the snow at your house. I don't see it that often living here in sunny California, unless we go up to the mountains. This looks like a lot of work, and what a guy your husband is to make this special for the kids. Happy New Year, Diana.

Now that is a true love story.... the husband who wants to create memories for his family and his wife who sees the beauty in his endeavor! Even if you do head back into the kitchen to make some fudge to take your mind of it this humongeous project. After all, a sugar haze makes everything seem possible!1 LOL Thanks for sharing your story!

Beth said...

That is really cool. And I think the fudge must be by now so I would like a piece please.

Unknown said...

OH MY GOODNESS! What an awesome thing to do!!! I have never known anyone to do that - you guys are the coolest! And that fudge?! I haven't had a piece of fudge ALL SEASON LONG! (Which you were next door.)

Well just so long as you don't all want to skate at once....lol.
Happy New Year to you Diana, and to all of your family.

Give that man of yours a big huge from me . . . what a sweetheart! I know that it was a lot of work, but it will provide such a nice safe place for the neighborhood kids to skate. I'm sure that he is a hero to all the kids and their parents. He's a keeper :)
Happy New Year,
Your blogging sister, Connie :)

Hi Di,
The house behind where I worked had a company come out and build an ice skating rink, it was interesting to watch. Such fun the kids will have!
Hope you holidays were wonderful!

I have never thought of doing that, but it looks like fun. There is no way we could run our water all night long. The bill would be in the hundreds! You need to get someone with a tank and have them haul it in, that would do it before Feb.
I'll take that pan of fudge, though.

Leena Milligan Lanteigne said...

We have a rink in our back yard! Well, it's actually a shallow area that fills with water when it rains and freezes during the winter. It kind of looks like a ring and I figure that the squirrels enjoy skating on it! LOL Good luck with yours! Hugs, Leena

We have an ice skating rink right here in Conyers, GA! And Honey Boo Boo just came to visit it. If you don't know who she is, just count yourself lucky! :-)

Dewena said...

How enterprising! Our grandkids would love that, and the fudge. Be careful putting it out to cool. Our Beautiful Brown Eyes came home with a whole country ham in his mouth. Do you know how hard it is to go to your neighbors and ask if they're missing a country ham?

:) One year long long ago an uncle of mine got the bright idea to flood the frozen pond to make it refreeze smooth. He spent all day on Christmas day using their irrigation system to flood it. And just as he got it flooded the ice beneath cracked and rose up letting all the water go under the ice. Not such a great idea after all!

Rick Watson said...

Wow! I occasionally gets cold in Alabama but usually a few days later it's warm enough to swim :)
My wife would love it there.

SImple and Serene Living said...

I'll be over to eat the fudge while sitting on the back porch watching the water freeze :)

Jo said...

My father would build us an ice skating rink in our backyard every winter. I always looked forward to breaking out the skates! Great fun with all the neighborhood children.

Just a suggestion ... my father would flood the yard {let the hose run} rather than use the sprinkler.

When it's ready can I come over? ;)

What great fun it will be. Don't you have to use some sort of scraper on it to rid it of any bumps of ice? It's going to be such great fun...take lots and lots of pictures!! :):)

AWESOME...I only roller skated but never ice...even to this day and I have had this dream as far back as I can remember...I'm skating across the ice and I can actually hear the skates painting swirls on the fresh ice and feel the little ice sprays on my face...
Does the fudge have pecans...I am a nut girl.....You are so caring, loving, and giving to your family
