RABBIT-RABBIT Happy First Day of May

Did you ever wonder where
the expression
RABBIT-RABBIT
came from and why people
say it on the first day of the month?

Wonder no more!
"Rabbit rabbit" is a superstition found in Britain and North America wherein a person says or repeats the words "rabbit", "rabbits" and/or "white rabbits" aloud upon waking on the first day of a month, to ensure good luck for the rest of it.

Did you know that already?
Want to know something else?
If you have one rabbit like this:
and you add one more rabbit like this:
I can guarantee you that
YOU
will get this.
Although in
MY FAMILY
you would more likely get this:
And, you will notice that
MY RABBIT RABBIT
has already prepared for
the pandemic!
As you can plainly see-
MY RABBIT is NO DUMB BUNNY!

Happy May Day!
Our state is in isolation until
the end of May.

I am going to have to resort to
ordering things online that I
would prefer to handpick.
Such is life!!!!

Stay Safe!!

  1. I have always heard the expression but never knew the background. Who needs Google when I have Diana!!! Stay strong and stay healthy, dear Diana!

  2. I had never heard of that! Our shelter-in-place order expired at midnight, but seniors are encouraged to continue to only go out for essentials so we probably won't be quick to change what we are doing yet.

  3. My grandma used to say "white rabbit" on the first of every month, and I just followed suit :)
Happy May Day dear friend, I wish our state was still in full lock-down, but starting today, the Governor sees fit to get back to normal, whatever "normal" is these days.
I fear he will live to regret his decision.

  4. "Tee, hee, hee"..... I prefer Julie Andrews version of "Tra La it's May" from Camelot.

Actually, I think all bunnies, prefer it too!!!!! -Naughty Gigggles-

I haven't been able to "pick out groceries," for weeks and weeks! Since my Dear-daughter-in-law and son, have been shopping for us. :-)

But most of the orders on line, and pick up at curb grocery stores, let you say "No substitutions." when ordering.

Wow! On lock down till the end of May?!? Ahemmm... Must be a Democratic Gov.!!!

Yup! Gov. Tony Evers is a Dem.

    "Tra la, it's May"

  5. I had never heard that, but you are right, one rabbit plus 1 rabbit is multiplication, not addition. I guess the Kitties keep the bunnies run off here, haven't seen one in awhile.

  6. Yay! May Day!
Bugs Bunny is pretty darn cute.
I need to whoa back on my ordering! LOL!
    Take care, sweet Queenie!

  8. I've never heard of that saying...but I do love rabbits. We had two in a hutch growing up. One we got from a neighbor, one just showed up one day. Someone must've thought our hutch looked like a nice place for their bunny. Luckily, no babies. And yeah...this lockdown. I'm in NY, in a hard hit county. I think we may be locked down all summer. Boo. xo

  9. Fun post for the first of May! And good upbeat attitude to have for making it through this upsetting period. I haven't written in my gratitude journal for a while but recently I've started again. It really helps to remember all the good things in our lives.

  10. We say Happy Rabbit Rabbit Day here, something learned from one of our children's teachers long ago. And the first person to say it "wins" so it's always a race to "get" someone. Now the grandkids are into it.

Oh rabbits! There's a bunny that's moved into our area and loves to nibble our blueberry bushes, reaching up to get the ones loaded with blossom. I discourage him by flinging bone meal in the garden beds, which works only until the next rainfall.

    Happy May to you, Diana.

  12. Been around a long time, but do no recall ever hearing this.

  13. I learned something today; I did not know this! Happy May Day!! Give Bugs a scratch for me!

  14. I have never in my life heard anyone say "Rabbit Rabbit" on the first day of the month! I guess I must not be living right. LOL. I'm glad you've got old Bugs Bunny with you. At least he will keep you laughing for this month. So sorry about your orders to stay home all month. But I suppose you are getting lots of stuff done in your new home. Can't wait to see the pictures. We like before and in between and after pictures...hint hint. Take care and God bless you.

  15. I haven't ordered food online yet, only vitamins. And Jess got me some chocolate chip cookies to go along with them as a treat. I have had a couple other deliveries for the house, and they all seem to be safe and on time. I hope you get the goodies you need when shopping online, Diana. And I've never heard of this "Rabbit" saying before. Learned something today. : )

    Happy first day of May!

  16. I SO wish I had started my day with Rabbit Rabbit!
We're slowly opening up now, but I'm gonna hold off for a while and see what happens. :)
    Be well my friend

  17. I have heard rabbit rabbit said by Canadians and Brits but hadn’t heard it from Americans. With what is going on, maybe we should start.

When this first started in March, we began to have our food delivered. Then we decided on pick-up which was no contact and gave us a reason to get out of the house. Because items are often missing from our order, we now do two different stores and space a few days or a week between them, and what is missing from one, we add to the other. Orders can be changed up until the day before. It has worked out fine for us. Good luck.

  18. This is a new one for me. I'll check out this on other sites.

  19. We are still able to shop, thank goodness, and so far I have been able to find everything on my list. If anything it should start to get a little easier from here on in.

  23. Well, jeepers! I learn something new everyday. I had never heard of this!!! I usually see a rabbit or two around my house this time of year but haven't spotted any yet. I do love bunnies!!! My state (GA) has "opened" so to speak, although I'm not sure that is wise. There are still a lot of restrictions though and people are still being told to wear masks and social distance. I haven't hardly been anywhere in weeks and I'm slowly going cra-cra! I did break down and make a hair appt. because I absolutely cannot stand this head of hair any longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll just have to pray a lot as she cuts and colors:)

  24. Well, I don't know where I've been because I've never heard of Rabbit-Rabbit before! I have learned something new today!! :)

  25. I have never heard this before! I have not seen any rabbits yet this year.We used to have a yard full.

  26. Happy May Day Diana! I did not know about where that saying came from! You always make me smile with your posts :) Our lockdown is ending in phases. Life here is going on much as usual anyway, except that you can't dine in restaurants, I think that is the biggest upset we've noticed. Today I was able though, to visit thrift stores again, so that was exciting! Don't you know the yard sales and thrift stores are going to have lots of great stuff these next few months, lol! Hope your lockdown ends soon! Blessings to you :)

  27. When I read your post title, my first thought was-where did this saying come from? Thank you! We get nests all over- believe me, my pups find them. ugh!

Hope all is well with you and your family. Trying times.

    Jane😘

  28. I've actually never heard that expression before. Interesting.

  29. Rabbit, rabbit! Yep, I'm familiar, and would love for all of us to have some good luck coming. Our state's starting to reopen, and even though we had a relatively low infection rate, it'll still be scary trying to test the new norm. Hey, put instructuons on those ckicklists like I do - "pick freshest date (milk, bread)", "choose green to yellow, no brown (bananas)", choose firm (fresh veggies)", etc. And definitely don't let them substitute anything you don't want them to. This has been a real job, just getting groceries in!

  30. Never heard of that, but it sounds like a fun saying for next year. We are in stay home mode until the end of May also...at least it is warming up a bit so we will be able to work outside. I am looking forward to that this year.

  31. We both featured bunnies today....how fun! Take care and have a good weekend!

  32. Hi Diana,

Happy May! Never heard of this expression, I may have been living under a rock at the time.

Although it's not an east coast thing and neither is celebrating May day, dang. Had to use it, ha.

We gave rabbits visiting often. A bummer at times, flowers I'd love to plant they enjoy as their main course.

On lock down until middle of May, 😪

    Stay safe my friend!

    Cindy

  33. It will be interesting to see what the month of May will bring our way. I'll say Rabbit rabbit in the hopes some luck comes our way and we'll see a big decrease in this virus . Some people will be going back to work here and we'll hope there is no increase due to it. I't would be wonderful if we could see a big improvement come our way !

  34. I have never heard that expression until right now! But, if it works I am all for it! I love bunnies, they are so cute.

Just got news yesterday that we are still to stay in place for the month.

  35. Have never heard of that term, but if I ever do, now I know!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I heard it.. but never knew what it meant. HA! Thank you for letting us know.

  37. Love those rabbits to pieces. That first looks much like a fellow I saw in my yard this morning!

  38. Rabbits are so cute - like cats. You just want to cuddle and kiss them.

  39. Lol, I never heard of that saying. How about that? I learned something new.

Texas has started reopening things - thank goodness. One of my online orders was not what I ordered...striped pants (um, just no) instead of the tshirt I wanted. Annoying. I'm needing some retail therapy!

How are you doing? I'm pretty sure I gained 5 lbs. sheltering at home. Baked pies, the neighbor kept making dessert and giving us some, good golly.at least we have decent weather so I've been able to work outside. Hope the purging and unpacking is going well.
    Hugs,
    Cecilia

  40. I've never in my life heard anyone say rabbit rabbit... asked around and no one else has either lol. We always just said may day may day and made may flower baskets to leave on neighbors' doors, knock and run, it was so much fun. I think we would have bugs bunny as our rabbit too... or maybe just elmer fudd lol. Blessings to you Diana!!

  41. We'll probably be the last to come out of hibernation. I go from grateful and reasonably content to jumping out of my skin. Fortunately I'm more grateful than antsy. Luckily I have a grocery only two blocks away and it's not crowded, so I still get to pick my fruits and vegetables. Take care!

  42. Well I have NEVER heard that, "rabbit rabbit"! Thanks for sharing this and teaching me something new:) Enjoy your Sunday dear friend, HUGS!

  43. I've never heard of that but if it would bring me Bugs Bunny, I'd say it every day! I am finally allowed to get my hair done May 6th. HOO RAY! Erich's beard looks like a bramble bush. But she's not doing beards. :-(

  44. I've never heard that expression in my life, let alone chanting it on the first day of the month! I guess I need to get out more, haaahaha!! I DID however, dream last night of holding a bunny just like the one in your first picture. And it was PURRING like my cat Sweetness, who for some reason was out of the picture! Perish the thought. Stay well, my friend. xoxo

  45. I've never heard that saying! Where have I been. I do have a short rabbit story. When I was a little girl, we had Sunday dinner after church quite often at my Aunts. She kept cages of beautiful white rabbits. I love looking at them and putting my fingers through the cage to feel their soft fur....fast forward my Aunt Nevada's fried chicken was the best, rather sweet. I ask my mom why the chicken legs were so small....Yikes...I had no idea they were raised for food. It killed my little heart...Don't think I ever fully recovered. Do people still eat rabbit...the tame ones...???

  46. I had not heard that story. I saw our first rabbits of the year over the weekend. There was a Mama and a Papa I think. They were so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well I didn't know that . . . lol. I do know that rabbits indeed multiply quickly (as do feral cats in my neighborhood unfortunately!). Can't believe May is already here . . . here's hoping the next month of quarantine goes quickly (I actually feel like it HAS gone quickly and I'm enjoying working from home!).

  48. I didn't know about the rabbit, rabbit thing. We were criticized for "breeding like rabbits" because we had nine children and it wasn't meant in a kindly way. I don't get why people think they can have a view on the number of children a person has, like we have to answer to them. Many people choose to have no children - and It's their business. I wouldn't dream of telling them they are being selfish not having a family.
Whoops, sorry about the rant, but your post brought back some memories.

  49. Never heard the term rabbit-rabbit. But I have now! Speaking of rabbits we have noticed a big old cotton tail hanging around our yard. He isn't very frightened by us either. So pretty to look at. But now if he starts getting in my little garden then that brings on more talk as my granny would have said. LOL! Florida has begun phase one with reopening some things and of course with stipulations. We shall see how that goes. Stay safe and sane lady. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  51. I’ve heard Rabbit, Rabbit, mostly from Sarah at Hyacinths for the Soul, but I never knew the meaning. Thank you, Diana, for explaining it. Now I’d better start saying it on the first of each month. Happy Mother’s Day! ❤️
