A LITTLE TEASE OF FALL AT MY PLACE

I crammed about 20 hours of work
into 11 hours yesterday-
some at the office and
then came home and did
office work for our household.
sigh-
My mother always said
"No rest for the wicked".
I think I resemble that remark!

Anyway-That means I did NOT
get a chance to
prepare for a long post today.
.
So- I am giving you just a
TEASER.
I will have a whole
FALL POST
soon!
I hope...I hope...I hope....

Oh-I do have one other little thing
to show you.
I bought a tomato plant from the
nursery this Spring.
I think it is called a Big Boy.
It looked like this when I bought it.
This is what they promised.
This is what I dreamed about.
I babied that little sucker along
and moved it here so it would
be protected.

Here is what MY PLANT looks like.
AND
to add insult to injury
THIS IS WHAT THE ONLY TOMATO
I GOT
LOOKS LIKE!
SweetCheeks:  I don't think you better EAT that tomato, Nana.
There's something
REALLY WRONG with it.
Me:  Yes-I can see that.
SC: It looks like a BUTT tomato!
Me: uh-huh--thanks for noticing.

SC:  Did you plant pumpkins, too?
Me: Sure did!

This is what my pumpkins look like.
If you're looking for a part time gardener
I come cheap!

I hope you are having a
GREAT OCTOBER
so far---and that your
'garden produce' is better than my own.

  1. It was not a good tomato year for me, either. There's always next year! -Jenn

  2. Oh how disappointing! I harvested about a dozen, but spent a fortune watering them. I won’t do that again.

    And no pumpkins either... sigh.

  3. Kids are so brutally honest! heehee! It does feel like Fall! We are having some nice cool mornings for a change! Enjoy your day! Take a Nana break!!!

  4. Oh, that poor, solitary little butt tomato! It wasn't a good summer for anyone's garden this year, I think. Sorry to hear you're working so hard. I hope you get a break and a rest soon.

  5. At least for fall and the winter you don't have to worry about the plants! Have a great week.

  6. I had trouble with my tomatoes two years in a row. After this year I vow to frequent my local farmers market!

  7. Ha! That's what my garden looks like every year! And I love your peek at fall. Adorable! xo

  8. Your garden produce is definitely better than mine. I don't have any at all. I've allways figured I must have been pretty wicked, No rest here, I just wish I could remember what I did to make it so. After being retired several years now, I can't imagine how I ever did all I did do when I was working. Retirement gives us more time, because we need it as we get older.

  9. Oh dear Lord, I went to the nursery last spring with my daughter-inn-law...she bought many plants, I bought one grape tomato plant. Her garden is so bountiful! As I walk past it (of course Andy put a raised bed in the front yard), I take handfuls of wonderful grape tomatoes to eat in the car.

My plant? At one point, Locklan told me it looked like my plant was asleep...it was laying down on the ground.

    You're not alone!

  10. I had one once, it didn't amount to much.

  11. Oh dear...that is a pitiful looking tomato, Diana. Sweet Cheeks is right...it does look like a butt-tomato. Maybe your pumpkins just need a little more time...lol. I grow faux pumpkins in the attic. They come out every year. From the boxes they live in from season to season....along with the berries, leaves, and sunflowers. xo

  12. Well, I mean, At least yours are green. Just sayin..

"looks like a butt tomato" hahaha. Dontcha just love em?

  13. Diana I had about 15 plants this year downsized and do you know how many good tomatoes I got off of them? Answer Two! Ugh the shame, pain, watering fertilizing all the good things we are supposed to do...and nothing to show for it had a bad year here myself trying to make a crop....Actually your plant looks really healthy pretty in fact. I had to pull my ugly things up....Loved the post as I do all of them...xoxo Dolly

  14. I gave up on vegetables. The flowers did okay, nothing super but better then nothing. We have no bees in this area, so trying veggies is a lost cause. We live to close to a school, where sadly they spray.

  15. today I needed a laugh and thanks for a couple of great laugh out loud moments. the tomato has me rolling on the floor and the pumpkin is killing me. I to am a master gardener. there is nothing I can't kill with my black thumb.

  16. LOL, this gave me such a laugh. I am pretty sure I'm good enough in the garden that we could be partners in the gardening business. I have about the same kind of luck. Someone gave me a tomato plant a couple years ago and mine got one tomato that weighed maybe a 1/4 pound if that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh dear, Diana...what can the matter be with that 'mater? You know what they say, try, try and try. Maybe next spring you will have a bumper crop.

  18. Your teaser makes me want to see more, Diana!

We gave up on regular tomatoes a few years ago for the very same reason. But our cherry tomatoes outdo the catalogues so we're happy.

  19. If it makes you feel any better, my tomatoes didn't do well this summer either. I blame it on too much rain, but who knows.

I hope you get a chance for some R&R soon!

    xoxo

  20. I am so sorry to tell you that I laughed out loud at your poor plants. I have a dark brown thumb too. If I touch it, it usually dies. I quit trying years ago. I love our local Farmer's Market. So much easier!

    ReplyDelete
  21. We planted two tomato plants and they must have been mis-marked because neither turned out to be what we thought we planted. Well perhaps in another month you’ll have pumpkins? Haha- guess it was an off year for you!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I had one tomato plant. All it did was grownup like Jack. Never got one tomato. I was raised on a farm.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh, I can so relate my tomatoes were so tiny and they were Big Boys also, my zucchini plants was all deformed but two! Well, better luck next year! Well, at least you won't have to can them LOL
Have A blessed Fall Miss you friend!
    Hugs, Roxy

  24. I'm sorry for that bad turn out. Maybe it was too hot for the tomatoes? And it doesn't look like you even had blossoms! You ever see any bees around? Or hummingbirds?
Well, you do everything else so well, and you have beautiful hair. So you are many times blessed.
I think you are right about the farmers' market next year. It is easier and cheaper. And you can lie to your friends when they ask if you grew them. Or not. Whatever.
I think we all love you anyway. Well, except when I have to pick a table and I don't like any of them......

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hehee you are funny!
Sometimes I get tomatoes like that, and I use them anyway.

  26. Tomato planting time will come around in six months and you will have another chance. Never depend on one plant; always do three and make one a cherry or grape. You have to work your way up to Big Boy. May I suggest Early Girl, that one is usually dependable and produces nice, sweet, perfect size tomatoes.

  27. My dear husband (who grew up on a farm) has tried so many time to raise tomatoes in our backyard, but alas we get exactly what you got!!!! From what I've read and heard tomatoes are easy to get disease. Don't know if that's the problem or not, but hubby has tried different varieties and babied each of them. So now we just go to the farmers market!!! We finally have some lower temps but I won't say we are "cool". Lots of leaves on the ground due to a long long time without rain. So looking forward to my boots and sweaters...maybe by Valentines!!!!

  28. Your thumb is greener than mine :)

  29. Oh dear, so sorry for your tomato efforts and also for your pumpkin patch. I don't see a lot of orange around there! Things will be a lot better next year, right? Hope so!

  30. Gotta love Sweet Cheeks! I think it is probably all this crazy weather these past months. Fall is hitting us this weekend for sure. Have a good rest of the week.

  31. Oh, dear! I, too, planted a tomato called a Big Boy or something like that, and got about 4 or 5 very tiny tomatoes! Didn't plant any pumpkin, though! Last year, I planted some squash and nothing happened! I'm not a good gardener, at all!

    ReplyDelete
  32. A disappointing tomato but there is always next year.

  33. Diana, Leave to SC to come up with something cute and funny. I love it. I have seen some awesome tomato plants, but yours isn't one of them. LOL. We did not plant a thing this year. Not even one tomato or pepper plant. Of course it would have been in a container garden if we had. My daughter is a wonderful gardener...she didn't get that from me. Remember I am not pioneer stock. LOL Can't wait to see your decorations. Diana, the Horton's Christmas Open House is Nov. 2nd, and the Christmas Vendor Market is Dec. 7th. Blessings to you and your family, oxox, love you, Susie

  34. I am slowly getting my FALL on too:) It is feeling like Fall and that makes it easier to get moving with decorating. Sorry about your plants. It is still fun to watch them grow even if they don't produce. Have a blessed day dear friend, HUGS!

  35. I didn't get one tomato or cucumber that I could actually eat. I might just skip planting them next year. All I got were bell peppers and I can't even eat them. I give them away to neighbors.

  36. I think we got our tomato plants from the same batch. I got one tomato, the squirrels got the rest. xo Laura

  37. Once again, you have me cracking up!! Too funny.

    ReplyDelete
  38. At least you planted something. All I got in this year was some basil. I got a pot of 12 little 4 inch high plants for $1. The lady at the store even marked it down so I would take it. Only four made it and they are now about 24 inches tall and full. I put some in my tomato sauce the other night and it was so good! Better luck next year with your plants. And both of us can hate on my sister who got a bumper crop of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, beans and eggplant.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We didn't have a good tomato year either, but my neighbor did and we got lots from him.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You are forgiven. You were so busy with life. I don’t bother planting tomatoes anymore because everybody is giving them away at the same time. And the Compari tomatoes that you get at Giant here are pretty close to home grown... I think they do better in the ground. That tomato was probably perfectly good to eat. I hope you ate it... better luck next year. Hugs

    ReplyDelete
  41. No good tomatoes here either. Maybe next year...the dirt where we're building is very rich. We shall see!

    ReplyDelete
  42. We must be on the same schedule. I'm thinking "one day I'll have a fall blog post too."

these people who had fall up by October 1 or before -- I can't comprehend. But I'm working on it!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hahahaa....omggg....You're my Sister from another Mister...I swear!!
I had the SAME pitiful results from my tomato and squash plants, as well!!
I KNOW it's not OUR fault! My plants did zilch...I've got three little green tomatoes on mine...I fully expect them all to fall off!
    (((hugs)))

  44. My tomatoes didn't do quite so well this year as well. Not sure why. Looking forward to your Fall posts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I have had the worse luck with tomatoes. The last few years, I did not plant any. I love the fresh grown tomatoes, however the money I pump into my garden is ridiculous when nothing good comes of it. Busy times for you Diana. I am now happy we have power again. Xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  46. My garden was disappointing also...in fact we took out boxes after about 10 years...I am cutting back!
Aren't you supposed to be retired?
    You are so busy!

  47. Tomatoes must be in a sunny spot and must be watered if they don't get rain! We had cherry tomatoes planted in a big pot and we enjoyed them all summer! Of course, Richard is a good gardener! Me, I just enjoyed them!😄

  48. It never ceases to amaze me how one years fruits and vegetables can differ from another … but as many farmers also experience this … it can be heartening for those that plant and garden to think better luck with the sowing, planting and growing next year :)

I always try and look on the bright side of things!

    All the best Jan

  49. -chuckle- Why do (some of) us, even try to grow tomatoes?!?!? Actually we don't any more. But our son and family, next door, have a lovely little organic garden.

Amazingly big tomato plants. Even lots of tomatoes. All but a few, will be finished off, by frost soon. Green of course. Except for the ones they gave up on and fed to the chickens. -grin-

What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing, over and over, and thinking it will turn out right, this time!

So happy you loved my posted picture of a lovely painting, by Lady Viktoria. I adore her work. -smile-

  50. Gardening is not for the faint of heart, my friend. Wouldn't want to count how many things haven't worked out for me over the years. I find tomatoes particularly picky. Here in Texas I know people garden in the summer, but I just haven't figured out what they grow successfully yet. Oh well. In truth, I don't have time in my life to pursue outdoor gardening. Houseplants seem to be working fine for me right now, although inedible, they bring me pleasure. Have a great day! Hugs, Nancy
