Play Me A Song-Please- Play Me A Song

When our little Ria was
5 she asked for a violin
for Christmas.
She REALLY wanted
a violin.

We thought it was a whim,
a passing fancy,
something that would
be forgotten long
before Christmas
the next year.

Guess what she wanted
for Christmas
last year
AGAIN?
A violin...
A real violin...

Auntie Mimi found her a
beautiful little violin
at a local resale shop
and gave it to her for
Christmas.
She picked it up-
having never held one before-
and played a few notes..
with no
squeeks or screeches.
She has
The Touch!
That violin is beautiful-
a gorgeous instrument..but...
too big for her little hands
right now.

When her Mom & Dad
signed her up for
Suzuki lessons
the decided to rent
a violin that is just
right for her.

This girl can play.
The instructor asked how
many lessons she had taken.
None-
Nary a one.
This girl has
The Touch..
Here she is playing
a piece for Nana.

Suzuki teaches using
a different method.
She plays the same song
but uses all different
tempos.
It is amazing to hear her.

And she has learned the proper way
to hold her instrument when
accepting applause-
And the proper way to bow...
Want to know what
SweetCheeks was doing whilst
Ria was playing the
violin?
With no attention on her,
and left to her own devices,
she was doing
SOMETHING!!
But WHAT?
Upon closer inspection we find
that she is using a pair of
SHARP POINTED SCISSORS!
Hnmmmm....
Well, at least she is not
cutting her own hair
and THAT is a blessing!

To end - I love this quote...
I want to make good citizens. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart.
—Shin'ichi Suzuki

  1. Video! I want to hear her play...God given talent cannot be taught, but only brought out of hiding...and I love it when a child is allowed to bring a gift forth.
You all had better keep an eye on SweetCheeks- she could end up with a mowhawk! More likely- someone else would end up with one.

  2. Sweet little girls you have!

Oh the many years of violin lessons. Not Suzuki lessons (Abbey tried as a little tot but didn't want to practice). Jill and Erin pick up their violins occasionally and Jill plays at her church.

Jamie played the cello and recently bought a used one. Don't know when she will use it with 5 kids and one on the way?!?

Sounds like Ria is going to have a lifelong passion for her violin and will be graciously accepting much applause!

  3. It's wonderful when kids can pick up an instrument and have a natural talent for playing it.

Stephen has that talent with the guitar, and the piano. He is now going to try the trumpet...

  4. That is wonderful! I hope she keeps playing throughout her life. It is such a gift to be musically talented. That is how my oldest daughter is as well, hand her an instrument and she learns it and charms beautiful music from it's soul.

  5. Wow, she must have a very special gift to just pick up that and play it. That is not easy to do. Later you will be watching her play in an orchestra.

  9. What an exciting gift!
I love her demonstrating her bow, too. I bet there will be plenty of opportunities for her to do that, in the future.
Adorable girls, by the way -- but then you already know that!

  11. YES, I LOVE WHEN YOUNG CHILDREN WANT TO PLAY MUSIC AND LEARN. EMMA HAD HER PIANO LESSON WEDNESSDAY. SHE DID HER EXERCISES AND THEN SAYS"HERE'S MY OWN EXERCISES" THEN PLAYS NOTES THAT ARE NOT JUST BANGING ON THE KEYS. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY SHE IS GETTING LESSONS, BECAUSE WE FELT SHE HAS POTENTIAL. I LOVE IT. SMILES .SUSIE

  13. This is such a sweet post. She obviously has a natural born talent for it. Funny she asked for a violin prior to ever playing one. Very interesting!!

  15. Oh how precious!!! My son used the Suzuki method when he was little (he was 5.) He used to play Mississippi Hotdog! I remember that he had to stand so carefully in just the right position. It's a fabulous method and I know that your granddaughter must have been destined to play the violin!!!

  17. Wow! That's amazing! My daughter Jaclyn has been saying she wants to play the violin, too! She's already taking piano lessons, but maybe I should get her a violin and some lessons! I've heard a lot of great things about the Suzuki method, too!
    Blessings,
    Janet
