DON'T HATE ME BUT-----WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...............

Happy Quarantining
for all of us in isolation.
In between unpacking,
sorting,
purging,
selling,
donating
and
wondering what to do with
THIS AND THAT...
I started to think of
what I am keeping and what
I am getting rid of--
AND---
that made me wonder
about things in blogland.

Now, PLEASE don't send me
HATE E-MAIL!
These are just my personal opinions...

This is not meant as a judgement
on anyone or anything...so
don't get your panties in a knot.

For instance--
whatever happened to
BURLAP?
I haven't seen a post about it
in a long time.
I never used it because it makes me itch...lol

and--

What about wreaths made of
pages of books-
although I will say that my
sweet daughter-in-law
made me one that I will
keep until the pages fall off--
and I still love it.

I know there are still people
painting with
CHALK PAINT
but I haven't seen nearly the hype
on it that I used to see.

What about books with
ripped-off covers tied with twine?
Still in?

SO--
What do you think?
Are these still trends or dying out?

Isn't it amazing how blogging
has changed over the years?
A lot of the DIY projects
are no longer as vital as they used to be...
everything is much more professional
than it used to be.

However, you still have
ME
a dinosaur in a gazelle world.
My changes are more subtle
than they used to be and I rarely do
TRENDY THINGS
like I might have done years ago.
So, 'kids', you are stuck with
little old me
(and I use the word LITTLE figuratively)

That being said-
What else can YOU think of
that I missed?

Hope you are all staying safe
and are healthy.
We are doing okay here.
Still working on getting the
condo in order so I can take some pics.

Loving it so far-
Easy and laid-back~

  1. I don't follow trends but sometimes I get sucked in without my knowledge for example; over the years I have "collected" a lot of things only to find out everyone else is collecting the same things. Say Unicorns, owls..........why did what I was collecting become so popular with everyone else???????? did it happen at the same time or was I following the crown unknown to me?.... I do tend to do my own thing. There was a time that all I wanted was Native American and as we travelled I collected. I only bought from antique shops or the maker of the object I desired. The theme now is British. My Native Americana dwells in a bedroom for now. The house has always been full of books so some of those objects da art have bypassed me........I love that you are still blogging and can't wait to see the new dwelling. Hugs always Janice

  2. Dear Diana, Yes so many things have changed-including us, we've gotten older-ugh! Hopefully wiser and sweeter through the years. I haven't blogged as much as I used to, but that's o.k. I am so looking forward to seeing your new nest! We are still watching and waiting on an RV, just like yours-but hubby is concerned with a recession possibly happening and doesn't want to spend money storing it. So I trust that when the time is right we will find one....then maybe we'll make a trip out your way to see the sights and maybe connect with you! Praying you are well and getting things done.
    Love,
    Noreen

  3. I saw this post just now and wondered what happened to the one about the tables, so had to go back and find it. I guess I missed it, but I was thinking you must have forgotten it! LOL. I can't wait to see what you are doing with your condo. I hope you've taken before and after photos. Either way, we are curious and anxious to see the transformation! I know what moving is like, having done it more times than you can count or would want to count. Hoping I'm done with it. Hope you are too. Take care and enjoy your time of settling in. What else is there to do?

  4. Stuff made from shipping pallets!!! I think too many people had to pick splinters out of their butts from their rustic pallet patio furniture, so thankfully that fad has died down.

The older I get the less I'm into what's popular. I know that in ten years no one will like it anymore and then it will look "dated", but I'll be too cheap to spring for an updated look, so my house will forever be 10-20 years behind times :)

  5. i did not know burlap was a thing, have never made a wreathe of anything, or painted with whatever chalk paint is, and certain never tied string around books, with or without ripping... the only trend i can remember was in 1976 animal print wallpaper was big, as in jungle print and i papered one wall and painted Davids dresser to match the paper. and i let Daniel that same year hang vinyl lp covers all over one wall and painted his dresser to match what ever it was... oh just remebmer one from mid 70's. i made butterflies from printed ribbons and sold them to people at work. my cousin did her whole tree in christmas ribbon butter flies, i made 100 dollars on those things and bought two 50 dollar bikes.

  6. I hear ya. It seems nowadays that the only crafts pursued are the ones that require supplies to be purchased rather than making do with what's on hand. BTW I love your books with the covers torn off - I've never seen that but love the look.

  7. Stencils. My first apartment, I stenciled a rose pattern (using dusty rose and that particular country green, of course) along the top perimeter of the bedroom walls. Even thought about stenciling the kitchen cupboards of our first home, but didn't do it. Burlap drives me nuts, too. Itchy!! -Jenn

  9. I completely missed the books without covers and twine thing.
I hope you are well, dearie dear Queenie.

  10. All I do is make crafts and I am constantly looking everywhere for ideas. I hate to break it to you but all those things you mentioned are STILL around. You're just not looking for them. I too wish some of them would go away. But I don't think so. Completely new ideas are limited and the old ones are just being re-invented.

  11. Well at least we still have you..Didn't know about the book thing..That's desecration of a book..I don't think I could do that..Chalk paint is still in but I don't see it in blog land any more..We are getting older and have refinished all there is to refinish?? We are past that time in our lives?? Stenciling?? I used to do a lot of that..Trends come and go..Are we as creative as we used to be?? I think it's our ages..We have all gotten older together..Hugs xxoo

  12. "A dinosaur in a gazelle's world" -- LOL, great phrase! All those trends passed me by too.

  13. Fun post . . .
But you are just that . . . FUN.

    How about a Pinecone wreath . . .
get kind of brittle and dry after ten years!

Blogging has made a change, I agree.

  14. I'm not much of a trendy person. I tend to hold out on something new for a long time. By the time I give up and give in to it(like burlap), it's already out of style!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have tried lots of crafts, some I stick with, some i DON'T. Some trends I try, but not continue. My daughters used to call them my craft of the month.

  16. Nice to see you again. Funny how things trend. hair cuts too. The wedge, came back. Do you think Shag Carpet will ever reappear. I hope not. HaHa. Got tire of raking it every time the kids stepped on it. Burnt orange and avocado...kitchen appliances..uggg!!
Finding all kinds of things as I do my "digging up bones" during this lockdown!!!

  17. You are right, I haven't heard about these projects in some time. But I think crafting goes in cycles, and there is always the hip new thing. Don't forget decoupage and Mod Podge! Do you do any kind of crafting, if so, what?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not trendy here ... and I was vintage before vintage was trendy. And like Vee said, “some things just need to fade away.” My son and DIL do actually have burlap curtains in their rustic home but they said they are tired of them. Interesting and fun post!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Drop cloth curtains and table cloths too. I still paint with chalk paint. Latest project was my faux Mora clock....

  20. I guess I never followed the right blogs, cause I don't remember seeing them on blogs. Or maybe it is just that I am not observant enough. One thing, in the late 70's, macrame was a big thing, and I see it mentioned on youtube...I did quite a bit of it. And think about doing some now. I never did really get tired of it.

    I did enjoy this post.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Things are ALWAYS changing.
You used to see a lot of people stenciling. I had some in almost every room at one time! I see Rose mentioned macrame which came to my mind too.

  22. Well, I go to AGWAY Feed and Grain and buy "Burlap" every fall and wrap my shrubs in it, I fold my Glad Bulbs and other Bulbs in Burlap and hang them up in the Cellar, I still have a roll of Baleing Twine I use, I have My Mothers Bible she was given wrapped up in Newspaper and tied with Twine.
I will be Glad when this "Stay Inside" and "Stay Home" is over !!! It is rough here in New York State, lots of Deaths, "too many" and I am Nervous about it ! Stay Safe, Stay Healthy and take care, Love and Prayers from the East , Gary

  23. Having flunked art class in 5th grade, I've not dabbled in crafts projects. Came close once to chalk painting, but when I sobered up (ha-ha), I decided to leave that to the Pinterest professionals. When all this mess is over, I'm holding out for a previously-loved, chalked desk -- and can say I support 'mom and pop' small business folks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Like you, I never liked burlap ~ and de-covered books wrapped in twine never turned me on. I have a can of chalk paint I bought about 5-6 years ago ~ I have never opened it. I haven't even scrap-booked in about 4 years, while I used to be mad about it!
    Great post, Diana!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yea, I think these have seen better days. Never liked the burlap look. I guess that's why I don't like trends, cause they come and go. I know what you mean about sorting and donating - I've been doing the same thing lately. I never understood the ripped-off covers on books. I thought they were just old and worn, silly me.

Keep your real dinosaur self, Diana. That's why I love ya.

  26. This dinosaur is too afraid of ruffling any feathers to add to your list! But I decided a year ago to just do what I loved myself without studying trends anymore. In my great age I decided it was time to do that! I'm glad you're enjoying your new nest!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Guess all trends, eventually *wear out,* and get replaced with the _next_ one. Cycles... Just like the Natural World.

But betcha', we all were glad to see this one, or that one, goooooooooooooooo.

Oh I remember one!!! Painting rooms, to try to look like, you had done a terrible job of it!!!!! As in, the very opposite of a smooth paint job. Yish!!!!! A smooth paint job, looked so much easier, that those "looks like a terrible paint job" walls. Gone, I think. >,-)

    Stay safe

  28. You know I don't see a lot of make it yourself going on now myself. You're right people seem to have gone to decorator school and everyone is teaching something professional looking. I feel as if I've been in the closets cleaning for too long and have missed what has happened in between. Oh well, who knows what and if any new it thing will be?
I can't wait to see your pictures! Glad you are enjoying your new place. xoxo Dolly

  29. Oh my goodness, I haven't thought of those things in ages!! I am not much of a crafter so never really got into chalk paint or wreaths made of anything! I think we just need to walk a few aisles at Hobby Lobby to see what is in... one of these days soon, I hope!

  30. I sometimes go with the trend but usually by the time I can afford it or get it made, It;s out of style. I can’t keep up.
The books with twine are still a trend. They paint them white and stamp words on the spine. Until this house arrest started, I was looking for some old books to play with. Again, by the time I get what I need, It will no longer be a trend.
But I do have a face mask. They seem to be all the trend right now. I also feel like a bandit if I wear mine. Just not ready.

  31. I think you are the coolest Old Woman, scratch that. YOu be a cool older lady, wait Maybe ........ Sherry says, "Now you done it boy!"
I always get a kick out of visits to your Condo. I would throw away the coverless books in strang. I wouldn't use burlap, it is for sack races. But now that wreath out of pages, I ain't never seen, but I mite like 'at.
Seriously, it is hard to give-away,trash, or sell many things in our 'collections of stuff.'
I was told the best way is let a stranger do the discarding. The stuff means nothing to them. But then they would tak a lot of it home, LOL.
    Love you lady,

  33. Trends come and go...and come back again! Recently, after a 35 year lapse, I started crocheting again...and I painted a paint-by-number! I'd be bored if things just stayed the same all the time...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I follow trends not at all now, and very little in previous years. I do like needlecrafts, but have decided that I will make things that last - like quilts, embroidered things, and such. I do have some burlap placemats made by my daughter that I like using sometimes.

  35. Hi Girlfriend. I do not follow trends but pretty much stay with what I love in my decor. Glad to hear you are getting so much done in the condo. Woo Hoo! Have a great evening.

  36. Things never really go away, they eventually come back around. Clothing for example, high waisted pants, bell bottoms, mid drift shirts are all in style with the younger generation. it just cracks me up to see these old styles popping up like they are a new thing.
Happy moving!! Purging ui such a great thing.

  37. You've reminded me of some crafts through the years that I have done... I never really liked burlap. I have used chalk paint, but not as much as I have in years past. It depends on the project and what I'm doing with it. I have no idea what the current trend is, but I love a mix of vintage, modern, and who knows what else. If I like it, I find a place for it, lol. I hope you are having fun decorating your new condo, will look forward to the pictures when you are able to share them :) Blessings!

  38. Remember "sponge painting"? CHEVRON pattern pillows and chevron everything? LOL. "Karate chop" pillows? ha ha ---never did understand that one! LOL (pillows all lined up on beds or couches---all karate chopped). Remember back in the 90s all the wallpaper borders that were up at the top of the ceilings?? Here's one I will never understand....people saying they have "farmhouse" decor. They do not live in a farmhouse. They do not WANT to live in a farmhouse. They have probably never lived in a working farmhouse. ha ha!! LOL My grandparents lived in a real farmhouse. They DID NOT have pictures of cows, sheep, oxen horns, muddy boots, chickens on the walls of the house. They didn't have up signs that said "fresh cream".... or "fresh eggs" in the kitchen, but they DID HAVE fresh eggs and cream, haha ha ha!! LOL The old farmhouse sink was a huge old chipped white porcelin sink, not the apron type sinks they call farmhouse now. And they had no "rustic" old reclaimed wood anywhere inside the house.....LOL!--but there sure WAS a real, genuine, rustic WOOD BARN outside and it housed real cows, pigs, horses and the like. ha ha LOL And there is no way....NO WAY...that either of my Grandmas would've had a sliding "barn door" to any of their rooms or closets inside the house. ha ha One of my Grandmas had shiplap walls, but most didn't like those, and had pretty wallpapers up, all colors and styles and prints. I remember all the old farmhouses of my childhood had pretty wallpaper in the kitchens and the bedrooms and especially the dining rooms and parlours where you entertained. And pretty white lace curtains.

  39. I think all that stuff is still an in thing but people are maybe not doing as much of it because money has to go to other things. There is a Dollar Tree craft group I belong to on Facebook and there used to be tons of posts there every day and now I rarely see any

    ReplyDelete
  40. Possibly many of the people who used to do crafts have been doing the Marie Kondo lifestyle instead, and have no time for crafts and don't want the creating of crafts to make any area that is isn't perfectly organized in their homes anymore. (Or maybe it is just me who can't seem to craft without having a disorganized area).

    Take care,and be well everyone.

  41. Lots of changes in Blogland! I miss lots of people who haven't posted in SO long. We used to do lots of giveaways and not so much anymore. DIY posts are a thing of the past I guess. Enjoy your day dear friend, HUGS!

  42. I always liked the dollar store projects.....even though I didn't make many of them! And I don't like buying things made in China (and will buy even less of them now). But I liked the inspiration! Enjoy your new home! Sweet hugs to you both!

  43. I think the project of moving, combined with this sheltering at home, really makes one think about where their interests and true self really lie. I gave away so much crap when we moved, crap I bought and thought I wanted in my decor. When I go back and look at some photos, I think, "what in the world was I thinking"? I know it was a purchase influenced by a force other than my own tastes. It feels so good to pare down, but I admit it's sometimes hard to steer away from the trends. My biggest motivation in steering away now is that I do NOT want to store it, so I don't buy it. Purge on, dinosaur!

  44. Girl, a woman after my own heart! I have never been one to do something just because 10,000 others were doing it. If I want to try it and I like it then that's great but I am usually not the "Let's jump on the band wagon" type. I do enjoy seeing what other's are doing and coming up with and how it looks. I mean it took me forever to switch my old flip phone out for a smart phone. LOL! I love to see new ways to fix food dishes and that sort of thing. Love looking but doesn't always mean I am going to copy it. I've always felt that we should do things like we like them and not just because others were doing it. And what is so funny to me is I am seeing more and more of the older things coming back in style and people are loving most of it. Things has a way of coming back around don't they? And I am the worlds worst at pinning 500 things only to NEVER do them! LOL! I do see changes with people blogging and what I have noticed more than anything just recently... more are now actually commenting on other's post. Maybe it's cause they have more time with the pandemic we have. I've always said, Do what makes you happy, create a lifestyle that you enjoy and can live with. Girl....love this POST! Hugs and blessings to you today. Cindy

  45. Being crafty doesn't seem to be as trendy as it used to be but still It would be a relief to see more of it these days. I know people are doing more at home than they used too so It would be nice to see what they re doing.l I'm reading lots of books here and not much of anything else, Hope you are making some headway there and can she us some pictures of your new home soon.

  46. Diana,
I think as people are looking for something to do, these crafts might just all make a come back and since we are also using what we have in our "stash", some of these past trends may also make a come back!! I think blogging is also trending as it provides a great respite from what is going on in the world for many including me!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!
Stay safe, healthy and happy, my friend!!

  47. I'm definitely not a trend follower...I still have a big red wall in my kitchen and I haven't done any major redecorating since 2002 when we first moved in and renovated. I guess I'm boring. I make small changes when necessary, like now, I'm in the middle of redoing things. As for those big blogging trends, I'm with you, burlap was always a no. It makes me sneeze. I'm also a little tired of shiplap and barn doors. To each their own, but they're everywhere now and I think the thrill is gone. ;) Stay well! xo

    ReplyDelete
  48. Diana, I think these things are trendy and crafters have probably moved on to other things. You are right you hardly hear about burlap, chalk paint, etc. anymore. Chalk paint is still available in stores (online) but I hardly ever hear about it that much.

Glad you are doing well! Sounds like you have gotten alot done. Take care!

    ReplyDelete
  49. What ever happened to “repurposing”, to save things from the landfill? Now I guess it's ok to fill it up with all the old stuff you don't want, including the stuff you repurposed that isn't trendy anymore. You only need to save the planet( haha) if it's trendy.
I pretty much decorate with what I like, maybe refreshing colors now and then.

  51. Never liked burlap...it always has a stench I did not care for.
I still would like to use chalk paint....but now there's also milk paint and mineral paint! Hmm, will have to think on those.
I do like white and gray (a trend for walls) but need color in accessories. All naturals looks nice but would drive me bananas.
Can't wait to see more of your new home...have fun working on it!

  52. I am so glad we are stuck with you, Diana, your positive attitude and fun posts bring many smiles. as far as following decorating ideas, I don't simply because they change so often, by the time I would copy something it would have gone away, like you I have to be my little old self! amin great company!
Thank you for visiting and for your sweet comment.

  53. I don't ever seem to follow trends. I just do me and if it happens to coincide, then swell. And if I do it two years later, well, it's because it worked that day. Life is too short to get any more complicated than it already is. Love you, my friend.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Trends certainly do come and go! I'm of the mindset of just surround yourself with the things YOU love and it will all turn out perfectly beautiful. :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi, Burlap.. yep, I began to itch too. LOL
And where did the hype of Chalk Paint go? Hmm

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm not into trendy decorating but I never did like burlap anyway. I just don't find it attractive in any way and like you said, it's itchy. Another trend I never liked was shiplap. Each to their own! I believe people should decorate with what they like and not necessarily because something is trendy or not. Hope you are safe and well! xoxo

  57. No trends for me as I go with my heart and desires. Things come and go as fashion and design does. So glad you are getting things. Moving and getting unpacked is a big undertaking. Take care Diana. Xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yeah, those things do seem to have gone away...tho I know they are out there....
I ran with burlap for about a year or so....even have some in my sewing closet...printed stuff with fleurs d'lys on them....
I painted furniture at one time for about 4 years or so ...went to garage sales bought pieces to paint and then sold them....that was years ago now....I still have paint in the garage which may be all dried up by now...
I never got into the pallet thing...too much work and poor quality of wood...
Now I am a quilt addict and make roughly 2 quilts a week....I have fabric coming and going all the time especially now .....
Can't wait to see your new "digs".....

  59. I do like chalk painted items. I never got into the idea of "roughing it up" tho. I have had my friends tell me my style is unique and eclectic. They say they love it though, so guess that is good. In fact, many say if I want to sell any stuff when I move to let them have a chance first!! I have a collection of beaded purses I am going to let go of. I may let go of some of my unique tea cups as well. Got time to decide. My ideas change when planning to move in with my life partner, Randy, when he and I are able to buy a home together. Right now it is all on hold!

    ReplyDelete
  60. You really don't have to "craft" anymore. You can usually buy the things people used to make, at all the HOME stores, or online. Especially the trendy home décor. I've had the things you mentioned infused into my décor over the years, but I sold lots of it when I had a booth, or it just ended up in a box in the garage. I still have pieces like, empty vintage frames, vintage bottles, and tons of doilies, table clothes, and other linens that I use in decorating and making sachets. We all like what we like, and that's okay. As long as our home doesn't fit a mold, and looks just like everyone else's. I love seeing a home that reflects a person's personality, and uniqueness(is that a word?).
    Great post, Diana!!
    Love you.

  62. Hi Diana,

I'm not a trendy person, they come and go. I paint everything with chalk paint. It's the best hands down.

Heck, what happened to following blogs? Someone needs to figure that out for me.

Looking forward to seeing the condo.

  63. I think these trends must have passed me by as I haven't done any of them, but then I do tend to do my own thing. Fashions seem to come and go and most of them pass me by.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Those things are pretty much not trending anymore but as for me, they never were. I did not get into any of that. As for unpacking and purging, prob came into play with not having anywhere to donate stuff. However I did find out a week ago that even though Goodwill is closed they are still taking donations. I was going to haul somethings today cause I have boxes on boxes but...its pouring down raining so its waited this long, guess a bit longer will not matter. As for the virus, you read my post and me being the only one to run errands, I am the one in charge!! haha. Lowe's being a must cause I am getting a house updated for sale. Never go without a mask and I wear gloves for pumping gas.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I followed so many trends for so many years and now I do my "own thing" and it's all very traditional. No chalk paint for me ever and it just kills me when the young folks paint a beautiful dark wood piece of furniture with chalk paint. But, to each his own, that's what makes the world go round and I look forward to see your condo pics.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I adore chalk paint! I used it last summer to paint two faux oak cabinets a cool white. It worked and looks fab. Well, for faux oak cabinets painted white... But I have to side with the commenter above who laments the loss of real wood to chalk paint. Yeah. Would not have used it on the real stuff.

"a dinosaur in a gazelle world"

    🤣

    ReplyDelete
  67. Look at all these comments!!! You are one popular girl. No wonder though because your blog is always so entertaining:) I never did get into the books without covers thing. I did do one chalk paint project but NEVER AGAIN...did you hear me...NEVER AGAIN. It's easy they said!!!! NOT!! Well, not for me anyway. And by the way, I like dinosaurs:)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Another dinosaur here. I did all the above trends. LOL There is always something. Pink doors anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well there are a lot of crafty things that I did or was given over the years that now I wonder what I was thinking. Remember the pictures made with old jewelry?I was once given two huge jars of pickled peppers as a room ornament and couldn't get rid of them for decades because the giver would have noticed and asked about them!Asfor books with the covers ripped off and used for a craft, I have a good friend who gave me what she called the perfect book to use for a certain craft. But it was about Thomas Becket (as in St. Thomas of Canterbury fame) and she expected me to rip that book apart??? Needless to say...

Anyway, I'll be glad when the donation centers are opened once again so we can part with the many things that are just piling up because, as you mentioned, none of our kids want this stuff.

  70. Diana, you are so right. Things come and go and sometimes without even another notice. When I first started blogging, I loved everything I saw and wanted to try them all. Sadly, I guess, I never did most of them except the chalk paint and still think that is around. After the first initial sightings, I guess I have just gone back into my 'grandma' mode. That is much easier and I don't miss anything I didn't do. To each his own..I am so anxious to see what you are doing to the new place. You will most likely be setting new trends!..Stay well and take care, my friend..xxoJudy

  71. I'm not a trend setter or follower. There I said it! LOL

Looking forward to your photo's, Diana. I know y'all are doing it all up nicely!

This pandemic thing is starting to get on my nerves. I really don't know why since I seldom go anywhere anyway. I do miss my family tremendously. So glad that my granddaughter posts pics of the greats that I can steal from FB .

Glad that y'all are doing okay.
    xoxo

  72. Hello Diana , lovely to find your blog again.
It's a weird time that's for sure, sometimes it feels like we're living in a sci fi movie. Edging around people in the supermarket, doing a dance around the apples, two other poeple step in front of me " Oh , forget it, we'll go without this week." And so it goes on around the shop.

  73. Oh my...I tend to stick to those tried, true and traditional things like quilting and knitting...BUT...back in the day, in the little house Mark and I bought when we got married, I used my horrible insomnia to rag paint, stencil and 'one stroke' paint (remember that?) the entire first floor of our house! Poor guy never knew what he'd find when he walked down the stairs in the morning.

  74. I still see all of these around but like all 'trends' they come and go in popularity. I still do a lot of things with book pages and old books because I love them so if you love it, who cares if it's "IN" lol.
