Flowers In Deck Planter Boxes

Wait till you see my
DECK PLANTER BOXES!!!

We have had a late Summer here.
It was too cold to plant outside until
after the first of June.
Want to see some
GREAT rail planters?
Don't you LOVE this one?
Unfortunately, that one is NOT mine.

Look at this one.
Ummmmm...that one's not mine either.

Nor is this one.
Wondering what MY deck planters look like are you?
You won't believe it!
Take a GANDER at this!
SweetCheeks & BigBoyE actually saw
the EGG WIGGLING as the baby
pecked his way out.
I didn't have the heart to disturb the planter.
On the OTHER side of the same planter
is this baby.
What's that you say?
I must have more than ONE deck planter box?
OF COURSE I do-you silly.
Want to see?
Well-here you go~
This one has plants in it.
See-I TOLD you I had plants!!!!
Just keeping it real, folks,
keeping it real.

  1. We just did our deck planter last weekend. We're behind and I'm blaming it on the weather too.

  2. That's a perfectly sweet reason not to have planters in full bloom. If it makes you feel any better, mine are planted but currently drowning in the 8 inches of rain we've had since Saturday. I'm ready to offer them water wings in hopes of survival!

  3. Haha! You certainly can't disturb that baby. I guess you'll have to wait a little longer to plant some pretties.

  4. Diane, I love your planter. After all you are providing a much needed shelter for the baby birds. I think that is just as pretty as flowers.

  5. Hi Diana, I had babies in my planter too and they just flew the coop. Funny thing was there were two nests in the same planter but the babies didn't change nests until just before they flew. I posted about it here.

    Thanks for sharing...

P.S. Popped in from Nellie's Berries & More

  6. You got some cute baby birds there and some wonderful bent grass going on. I hope you weed it and keep it trimmed like in the magazines. LOL

  7. What a wonderful experience for the grands! I am just now getting my planters filled too, so you aren't the only "late bloomer" Hugs, Penny

  8. BWUAHAHAHAHAHA~!!!!

I almost spit out my morning coffee reading that, hahahaha. You cracked me UP!

I think it is awesome your gbabes could actually and miraculously see a bird being born, how special is THAT?

No, you couldn't disturb those nest, no way no how. How neat.

As for those lovely "other" planter boxes? They are great but way over planted - don't you think? I mean someone did those for a special occassion only - because in no time at all they'd be root bound and not flourishing, do you think?

Maybe that's just me. I tend to think less is more when planting in small spaces. And I prune like crazy and everything does well then most years.

    Hugs.

  10. Some parts of mother nature's plan go on, even if we can't . :):)I think it must have been exciting for the children to watch a bird come into the world. Yesterday, I saw a bird fly to the side of our catalpa tree and land on a little bump and hang on. I went out to look and it was the bluebird leaving home. I saw the parents later flying around too. My first bluebirds here. :):) Diana, seeing those beautiful planters...gosh my containers look rather sad. LOL. xoxo,Susie

  12. Oooh, I love your deck planters the most of all dear Diana... what sweet little new lives just beginning... and how fun your grandchildren were able to watch it hatch... I love it when children learn about Nature at an early age... so many delights await them... thanks for sharing... and kisses and prayers to baby birdies, xoxo Julie Marie

  13. I try not to let the birds start nesting but once they have I can't disturb them either.

  14. so precious. What a nice surprise. Flowers are overrated anyway LOL

  17. Awwww! I wouldn't have the heart to disturb them either. Everyone wants to stay at Nana's house! :)

  18. Those first three planters are gorgeous, but you will get much more enjoyment out of yours. Sharing that with your grandkids makes me think of similar moments with my Nana. They will remember it. Trust me.

  19. Thank you. From the bottom of my heart... As you see, we have two flower things.... Yep.. Gifted for my retirement... And barely tended... I dunno if I can blame our weather... I'm not moving very fast!

I love the birds of paradise and ornamental grasses in yours... Just sayin'.

  20. Those may be the best kind of planters, Diana! Planting new life. Amazing!

  21. I'm so proud of you for leaving those babies to grow up. Some people wouldn't.

Those other planters are gorgeous but you have living breathing sweet babies in yours. Do you know what kind of birds they are?

  22. We have had a long chilly spring and I think most flowering is behind here too. We are just finishing up springtime chores. Now I am hoping we don't fly into hot, dry summer weather.

My for-always window boxes are filled with inpatients but I have heard there is a disease with them. Unfortunately I didn't learn of this until I planted. So far, they are doing well. But, last year, for the first time ever, we fought something and lost them early in the season.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yup, that's about the way my spring was, it was late so I just planted a few things and let the rest go. Maybe I can post my weedy yard and between the two of us we can start something new!!! Think it will catch on??? :)
Love the baby birds though...I would have skipped planting too and left them alone.

  24. You are my kind of gardener!! LOL

  25. I don't know anyone else who has planted baby birds or grass in their planters. You are a true, horticulture visionary!

  26. today is the 11th of June dear and summer as going by our solar orbit does not start for another 11 days. Summer is not late, you're a little early. Love that you didn't disturb the robin's nest

  27. You definitely have a green thumb!

  28. How exciting to see those babies hatch! Your planters look just like mine! "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.":-) xo Nellie

  29. I truly appreciate real! I wouldn't have moved the bird's nest either. I do have to say that the second picture really makes my heart flutter a bit...stunning, but I would never be able to keep it that way!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The grass isn't always greener in the other deck planter... sometimes it's feathery-er!

    ReplyDelete
  31. That's how mine would look. I do have a Robin nest in my snowball tree, though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My flower boxes are doing great this year! I love your baby birds. I think the one is a mourning dove baby. So cute!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, how exciting to have those baby birds! You can always plant after they leave. I still don't have my planters done because I get one nice day and then 5 cold days...another strange spring!

    ReplyDelete
  34. We just found out we have baby Robins in the yard; your babies look like doves? O.k. I really think you should have told us where these planters are-or linked up to them if they were from blogland. Wish I had some like that too.
    Hugs, Noreen

  35. Hilarious. Those window boxes ARE gorgeous, aren't they? But the birds are pretty darned cute.

  36. We have birds and their babies in the back yard. It's soooo entertaining! The birds torture our cat. They chase her around the yard. It's crazy! I guess they're trying to keep her away from the nest. Is that where the phrase cat bird came from? Anyway ... the planter grass is nice and green. Miracle grow? Haha? Love you and your sense of humor. And realness...is that a word?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am loving your honesty, keep it real sister. I always dream of having lovely boxes like your photos and I can start off early spring with them but this week has been in the 90's and today I noticed their short lived life is drawing near.

I wish I could have some unexpected guest like your feathered friends, to cute. Thanks for sharing Kathy

  42. You have the very best planters! What a miracle...baby birds! I love them and they will be more fun to watch than flowers growing! You can do that later! Sweet hugs!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hahahaha, that was unexpected Diana!
Those babies are precious and the color of that egg is magnificent! Your 'plants' in the other planter ummm.....not so magnificent hahaha, sorry, I couldn't resist! I love it when people keep it real, it takes the pressure off of me haha.

    Blessings,

  44. ROFL!!! Ya big goof! I'm glad that you left the babies alone and sacrificed planting flowers. I've done that same thing before too! Looks like robins and a dove - so cute! WE have lots of those babies here too. Those flower boxes are gorgeous! Maybe you can just swipe those LOL! Hugs, Leena

  45. Diana those sweet birds are better than flowers. I only planted one of my three window boxes LOL dont feel bad.

  46. Diana, I like your planters better. Flowers can come later. Just wondering did they legalize "Weed" in Michigan? Oh no, that was Colorado.

  47. We use propane gas for our cooking and supplemental heat in the winter. I went out to check the level on my tank yesterday and when I lifted the lid a baby bird lifted its beak for me to give him food.
I eased the lid back down. I just hope we don't run out of gas before it leaves the nest :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh shoot, that is way more fun than having just dumb old flowers in the box!

  52. Awww........how sweet! I wouldn't mind not having flowers in my planters if I knew I was helping out the bird species either.

    ReplyDelete
  53. You are doing better than me, mine has no dirt no flowers nothing, yours is a home even the ants don't live in mine.

  58. You goof! I would hate to move the little birdies too. Just wait and you can plant some fall flowers in them. After you clean all the poo poo out of them. Those little birds sure do poop a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks for the laugh..Out loud, I might add..Too funny..Nice to have an excuse not to plant your boxes..The "not mine" ones are beautiful..

    ReplyDelete
  60. So funny...we've had to let plants die so we wouldn't drown the babies when watering...

  61. You never cease to amaze me with your gardening. Now you've grown BIRDS???? LOL!!!!
Your second box looks like a few of my flower beds. YIKES!
