I thought I would post this for some of my readers
that didn't know me--BACK WHEN~
I came across this in my "to post" list
and I don't think I ever posted it.
IF I did forgive me.
This seems like yesterday but must be
SEVERAL YEARS OLD.
sigh
This is a long post for me-
so grab your coffee, tea, or
drink of choice.
Anyway--Here you go-
How To Be A Good Nana!
1. The first thing you must do
is get some grandchildren.
If you haven't any of your own
SOMEONE SOMEWHERE
will surely be willing to let
you buy theirs...er..I mean
borrow theirs for a day.
We rustled these up and
hauled them home..one
slipped off and went home
with mom and dad though..
Yep--the littlest one escaped
THIS TIME.
2. The second thing you must do,
after bathing the little suckers,
is read them a bedtime story.
This has become a favorite.
If you don't have it-
you MUST buy it..
You CANNOT be a
GOOD NANA
without this book.3. It MUST have pop up pages.
That way it takes twice as long to
read because
SOMEONE must poke
their finger in every hole
in the pop-up and ask
WHUT'S IN THERE?
Yes-Pop ups are a must!
Notice what she is eating?
It has become fondly known
at this house..as..
The Three Bears Cereal! All too soon
6AM rolls around because
THEY find you.
THEY hunt you down
because
THEY know
WHERE you sleep!
Ah~ Yes! They thought the
hour would never arrive..
It is
BREAKFAST TIME.
Time for what?
Are you paying attention here?
It is time for???
Yes..That's it!
Three Bears Cereal
First (I think I have lost
track of the number of steps
it takes to be a good Nana..
Never mind...read on)
First-You must have
a big pot of boiling water.
I got this out of the sewer..
Oh wait! No! I didn't~
It is BROWN because it has
a pinch of salt and
CINNAMON in it..
You might think that
CINNAMON is the
magic ingredient
but it is NOT!
We will get to that
LATER.
Ok- Pot...boiling water..
DUMP the Oatmeal in!
How much? Seriously?
I dunno- I never measure..
I just dump til it looks
somewhere between mucus
and cement. Works for us.Stir for about ONE MINUTE
(providing you are using
One minute Oatmeal-got it?)
THEN you add the secret
ingredient...it is....READY?
Vanilla...GOOD Vanilla..
None of that cheap all-alcohol
vanilla - I drink that but don't use
it for cooking. Kidding...just kidding..
I drink the almond flavor.Boil a few seconds more..Slap 3 Princess dishes on the counter.
If the boys were here you would also
see Thomas The Train bowls!
Oh-yeah...there's a second
MAGIC INGREDIENT too.
It is butter...Real honest-to-goodness
WISCONSIN BUTTER.
All those chubby people you
see when you are shopping?
Yep...all eating Wisconsin butter..
(I resemble that remark)Just one little pat will do ya.
Next up...sugar...good raw sugar..
brown..and wonderful..and?? C'mon~
Sugar is ? Sweet...Yep..Sugar is sweet..
and so are you...
Wait-I am getting sidetracked here.
Make it into a nice heart shape..
To match the heart shaped bowls..
Get it? (that is SweetCheeks new
byline...GET IT?
Yep..I GOT IT!
And then...and then...
To make it
OH SO CUTE..
You take a heart-shaped
cookie cutter..AND
you stamp a heart in the
center of it.
Now, I ask you..
Now, I ask you..
Is that CUTE..or what?A word of caution to the
New Nanas..
DO NOT ADD MILK
It wrecks the
hearts and makes the kids cry.
Trust me on this.
On Saturday mornings..
they eat on their own little tables..
First is Lulu...someone has colored
on her table and she is not too
happy about that fact...but she is
a hearty eater and decides to
forego complaining to work on
the task at hand.Ria very daintly picks at hers.
SweetCheeks immediately eats
the sugar off hers and tells me
that YOU FURHGOTT THE SHUGHAR
on hers.
REALLY..
Yes..Seriously..Nana..Yoah DID!
(Liar, liar..pants on fire)
I didn't forget but I will get you
a LITTLE more sugar.
Sigh...big sigh..OHKAY THEN!Now comes
THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
OF THE TUTORIAL..
You must PACK THEM UP..
and take them home!
Any questions?
Look for more tutorials in
the future.
Next up we will discuss
spit painting on the
breakfast nook window.
Doesn't THAT sound like fun?
And...thank ya for stopping by~
Cute! And such sweet pictures of your grandchildren. You DO know a trick or two!
ReplyDeleteyep, i got it!!! ha ha... i will try the vanilla in my oatmeal, but it will have no hearts.
ReplyDelete...we have 5 grandkids, but they are getting so BIG!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love this! I'm glad you posted. You are funny and thanks for the laughs! The girls were so cute. Good memories and a great tutorial!
ReplyDeletexoxo Dolly
Oh my goodness, so cute & funny - and so TRUE. Must be because I was raised a midwestern girl because this is almost identical to the way my DAD made my oatmeal for me as a little girl!!! With the butter pat, the brown sugar and dash of cinnamon, and the ONLY change is that I loved it with milk, like my Daddy ate it :) And cream instead of milk was even BETTAH.
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I never had butter on oatmeal, but it is one of my favorite breakfast foods. I enjoy it a great deal!
ReplyDeleteCute post! I remember having butter on my oatmeal many years ago. :) Where does the time go? Have a great weekend, Diana.
ReplyDeleteI've NEVER been good at spitting cleanly. So, I look forward to your upcoming tutorial
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish I had some little ones to do this with. I don't think Lily Grace will eat the oatmeal, but then again, I haven't offered it to her...maybe she would! And I don't have that lovely pop up book either...I wonder where I could find it? I bet Lily Grace would love that. I may have to check this out for our next "Adventures of Lily Grace" post. I don't have any little live wires to have this fun with. Some things in life just aren't fair! But I sure enjoyed this. I bet you are the bestest Nana ever!!
ReplyDeleteSweet post and nice to see photos of your grands when they were little. They grow up too fast, don't they?
ReplyDeleteDiana, I love this post. Wow those sweet little princesses...sure miss them. I miss my own little girls too. One of my daughters used to pick thru her food ...always afraid a bean might be hiding in something. LOL. I still laugh about that. Hope everyone is well and staying warm. Blessings, xoxo, love you dear friend, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteA good warm cereal on these cold mornings is delicious. Grands are so wonderful and deserve a special breakfast . Thanks for the recipe!

Super cute post. Oh these little sweet girls are so big now. Where did these sweet little grand girls go? Happy Friday. Have a great weekend. xoxo
ReplyDeleteYou spin the greatest accounts of Nana life
ReplyDeleteSo much fun! I found myself nodding and smiling through this. You forgot the important part about Nana collapsing on the couch and having a nap after the children go home.
ReplyDeleteCute! I used to make rainbow eggs. Stir the eggs up and then put a drop each of blue, green and red and lightly stir before cooking. Viola! Rainbow eggs! Sometimes I would make green eggs and ham!
ReplyDeleteI have never eaten oatmeal this way but now I want to try it. Will you adopt me and make it for me?
ReplyDeleteYou are making me want oatmeal, now! Maybe someday you can repeat this process, but with GREAT grandchildren! Do you still have the bowls? -Jenn
ReplyDeleteWow, you must be the best Nana in the world! You go above and beyond for your little girls!
ReplyDeleteI know your grands think you are just the most glorious grandmother!!!! I enjoyed this post so much...you always make me smile or laugh. My 2 grands are now teens and I sure miss all the crazy/silly/crafty/fun/yet exhausting things I used to do with and for them! Granddaughter still calls on me for shopping and homework help, but grandson is too attached to girlfriend to think of much anything else!!!!! So with him I've been replaced...boo!!! Keep enjoying those kiddos...even if they wear you to a frazzle:)
ReplyDeleteI loved every word and every picture and the instructions on how to be a good nana are spot on!
ReplyDeleteI'd probably mess up that kind of oatmeal. I just use instant. So cute!

ReplyDeleteHaaahahahaa I give mine cold cereal and apple juice to drink and tell them to consider themselves lucky. They wouldn't eat oatmeal anyway ... not even the kicked-up kind you're serving! We always had a pat of butter on our oatmeal when I was a kid. Good memories. xoxo

Oatmeal -- best breakfast ever! Especially when it's shared with ones as cute as this!
ReplyDeleteThat's very cute Diana! :) I will never be a grandma or a mamma...only a fur mamma, but I love that you add a dab of butter and the heart-shaped sugar!!! So sweet! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet way to have oatmeal. :-)
ReplyDeleteAre you thawing out over your way? Our coldest temperature was -30!! And that was the temperature!!
Love, Carla
SOOOOO cute.
ReplyDeleteDiana, you have the best personality and I bet you are the fun grandma!
Coincidentally that is what I put in my Cream of Wheat that I actually had Sunday for breakfast. Vanilla, Cin, brown sugar, milk and a splash of cream.
It has to be a bajillion calories the way I make it, but hey it is winter. What can I say with 12 feet of snow out there, snowing now and no where to go due to Covid isolation. Eat. Yes, eat comfort foods. : - )
Stay well, friend. Hugs.
I don't have grandkids yet but you can bet I was taking notes... with lots of giggles!!
ReplyDeleteSweet pictures and what a fun post Diana.
ReplyDeleteHugs diane
