I wrote this poem a few years ago
and thought I would post it for those of
you that did not see it before.
Memorial Day is here once more,
We fly the flags above our door,
We plant our flowers that mark the grave,
Of every solider that was so brave,
They fought for freedom for everyone,
Many lives snuffed out by a sniper's gun.
We proudly march in our little bands,
As daybreak filters across our lands,
But I wonder if we can truly see,
What cost it was to make us free.
Confederate soldiers fought the Yanks,
Some brothers fought brothers in those ranks,
To free the downtrodden that were lost,
To free all men at any cost.
My father was a medic in World War One,
A war not talked about by anyone,
Some men lost limbs and some were gassed,
Some were picked up by comrades, others
bypassed.
World War II! How tragic indeed,
People standing by watching others bleed.
Souls thrown to the winds with no remorse,
Foreign government standing on their own
course.
Vietnam was not a war they said,
Then how come so many soldiers ended up
dead?
No heroes welcome for them in sight,
They slunk home in the dead of night.
Should I go on-with Korea & Desert Storm?
Iran? Afghanistan? Are you getting warm?
Do you feel the pain you see in their face?
Does it make you squirm in your warm, safe
place?
I've just one more thing I'd like to say,
It's about celebrating Memorial Day,
Look around and everything you see,
Was paid out in blood so that we are free.
Put your hand on your heart,
For the blue, white and red,
Raise your eyes to the flag,
Say a prayer for the dead.
Because of a solider I can have my say,
So ~God Bless you this Memorial Day~
And To All Our Soldiers-

ReplyDeleteRoxy xo Enjoy your weekend!
God Bless Your American soldiers. Very touching poem but so true Di. One says Freedom rings. The way I hear and see. The dear soldiers are not even recognized from the government of there bravery they have done for America. They fought for there Country sweat and blood. Only people like you and others recognize what they did. The higher of Government does not. Medical staff are coming forth to tell there sadness for them.
ReplyDeleteOn the news it says that they are not getting any medical benefits or being omitted into the hospital system to be looked after for like 9 months later to a year. They are treated like an abused dog would have. Sad,sad.
Now on Hanidy Show the doctors are speaking up. I don't to like to use names. I think you all know who. Has not a heart of gold. Shame, shame.
Why should the soldiers be last in line to be helped when wounded, sick, treatments, or depressed coming home. They deserve better. I keep them in prayer that something needs to be done for them immediately. Sad some cannot be helped with the pain and loss limbs needing therapy are also depressing bouts and many take there own lives.
For sure they fight a good fight of freedom but they also suffer physical and mentally.
I pray Dear Lord help them they need not have too take there own lives as I have heard on the American news channels from widows and parents and siblings and children. How very, very sad.. Thank God the Drs are speaking out. Something needs to be done NOW.
Thank you so much for saying what all our hearts want to say. You did it powerfully and beautifully. Sending love and hugs.
ReplyDeleteDiana, what a heartfelt poem! Truly, we should be grateful for the sacrifices made on our behalf! May God bless these families and our soldiers that put that risk their lives for us, so that we may continue to have our freedom and live in this beautiful country! Thank you for this reminder. God Bless America!

Beautiful poem Diana. So true, Servicemen and women gave their lives that we might be free. Just like Jesus did.....he gave his life that we might be saved. Oh but the evil one wants to take that all away from us. Look how this world is going down the tubes.....it is so very sad to watch. Such a wonderful country being ruled and ruined by men who think they know more then God. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteSo beautifully written.
ReplyDeleteSo beautifully said - that is beautiful, thank you. It really sums it up to a T. I think we forget and take it for granted and we don't mean to.

ReplyDeleteThat is so beautiful. My father was on Normandy beach on D-Day. He was fortunate to return home - with a Purple Heart. I can barely stand to see news footage of that day. Too heartbreaking. Your poem touches me in the same way. My all time favorite saying originated in the 60s - expressed by a child. I'm sure you remember it. "What if they gave a war and nobody came?"
ReplyDeleteLove the poem. You have a lot of great points in there! Through the years... War has relied on a few to protect the many. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! Thanks so much for sharing. I wish that more people would recognize and honor our veterans, those that gave their all and all the active duty military.

lovely thoughtful poem. I was Air Force during Viet Nam and appreciate your words.
ReplyDeleteNice poem. I was a volunteer at a servicemen's center in S. California near Disneyland during Vietnam war and would visit soldiers returning from the war in the hospital at Camp Pendleton. It was a shock to see the young men who had lost limbs, sometimes the complete lower half of their bodies, lost sight, were disfigured. We would do our best to cheer all of the young men. We visited with each, read to some, wrote letters for others, and would do shows of singing songs for them. Once we girls dressed as hillbillies and had homemade instruments we played while singing funny songs of Homer & Jethro. The young men loved it. At the center we would provide food, a place to sit and watch tv, a place to make free phone calls to their relatives, had dances, played games, and did our best to make them forget the war and laugh. We owe so much to our soldiers.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful poem Diana.
ReplyDeleteBravo! Diana this is a beautiful, heartfelt poem. Thank you for sharing. So much for which to be thankful in this country.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem. All to often we lose sight of what this holiday is all about. We do have so much to be thankful and grateful for. We owe our soldiers so much, they gave of themselves willingly. Terrible was going on with the VA and how long our soldiers are waiting for treatment, we should be ashamed. My hubs is a Vietnam veteran, and I always thank him for his service, they were not treated very well and he stills hurts from it.
ReplyDeleteOne Word: Excellent!
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL! That is just such a strong and powerful poem that I am so glad you shared. SO many have given up their lives for us and we need to honor them.....a blessed weekend to you friend. Nicole xoxo
