Chickens For Sale Today!
Chickens For Sale Today!
They are colored and dyed
And my Mother lied
Cuz she said they were born that way.
Yes-It's true.
I grew up in the land of make-believe.
When Easter rolled around on the farm
we were presented with
rainbow colored chickens.
They came kind of ratty looking but
after a bath they looked like this.
They came kind of ratty looking but
after a bath they looked like this.
We were told they came from
colored Easter eggs.
I believed it.
I believed it long past the early
years of gullibility.
picked a color and those were the
chickens we called ours.
chickens we called ours.
I always counted to make sure
that "my color" covered the
most chickens.
Yes.I.Did.
After a few weeks their color wore off....
but by then so had our interest in them
and they went into the hen house.
I teach my grandchildren the same thing.
But they are all "onto" me.
How did today's kids get so smart?
Hmmmmm....
So......do you think if I left these
silk dyed eggs
lying around
the kids might think these hatched?
Oh- yes- to be able to go back in time
and believe in the unbelievable again.
But...reality being what it is....
I now know what happened
to those sweet little
FLUFFED COLORED CHICKENS
that I cuddled and loved.

Yep- From Fluffed To Stuffed.
Chicken Anyone?
Chicken Anyone?
I love the magic of each holiday. I have to keep reminding my freshmen in high school to not "spoil" the magic with her much younger sister.
ReplyDeleteEaster hugs!
I love easter.. I want colored chicks... I also want a pink poodle.. lol!
ReplyDeletelove this post Diana.
have a great day
xoxo
Hi Diana,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laughs so early in the morning. Yep, I believed in colored chicks and colored Easter bunnies too.
hugs and Happy Easter,
Sissie
O'Diana, I LOVE this post! Those colored chicks are adorable...it makes me want one...LOL!! Enjoy your day, Gail
ReplyDeleteLOL!!! I remember those colored chickens from when I was a child!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh this is good one! LOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteDiana, I remember when colorful chicks were sold at Easter. The Hy-Line (chicken company) Would give free babies chicks to anyone who wanted one. Mom would take all us kids to get one...then we took them home to raise and eat. Yes, we named them , then ate them when they were big enough to make our family a meal. But it was nice to have a pet for a while.:):) I loved your paisley eggs and bunnies.xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteSweet post. I honestly never saw or heard of colored chicks ??
ReplyDeleteReally?? Was that for real??
I wasn't around, reading blogs when Charlie passed, I read it much later. So sorry for your loss. I am guessing that remembering sweet times with him is painful & sweet at the same time. My deepest sympathy.
:D I was the silk dyed eggs on The Chew last week. I need to find some ugly old ties and dye some eggs!
ReplyDeleteCute post, and I remember those little pastel chicks when I was little.
xo,
RJ
Those chicks are so cute
ReplyDeleteTo be able to view the world with the wide-eyed wonder of a child is an amazing thing! Love those rabbits! Also - stuffed chicken! Now, there's a dinner idea! Thanks!
ReplyDeletexo Nellie
We only had yellow chicks. That's the best for them anyway. Love chicken, anyway they come.
ReplyDeleteThe magic of Easter in a chld's eyes is such a gift to parents! I miss this, now that my own brood is grown and gone. Treasured it while we had it, yes we did.
ReplyDeleteYour last chicken is making me hungry.
I saw those colored chicks as a child. They are so cute. Dying chicks is probably not allowed today. I'm sure it's not considered entirely humane by the animal rights groups. But then, neither is stuffing them. I wonder how much longer we'll be allowed to do that?
ReplyDeleteMy little one loves to dye eggs !!! The highlight of easter !!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Diana! Coloured Easter eggs and egg hunts were not part of our traditions. I don't remember any French Canadian families ever doing that. Perhaps the English Canadians did it. I don't know. I lived in a French neighbourhood and went to a French school. All my friends were French. We always had an Easter basket when we woke up Easter morning and were told it was from the Bunny Rabbit and I believed it for a while. I also once was given a cardboard box filled with real live chicks that had been dyed. I think I had them for a day and they disappeared somehow. I can't remember what I was told because I was too young. But, I do remember them.
ReplyDeleteYou are funny! That last photo cracked me up!
ReplyDeleteA chick any color is precious...although a pink colored chick would be such fun :)
ReplyDeleteYou had me laughing with the silk dyed eggs and rabbits - too funny!
Have a fabulous day!
Hugs,
Stephanie
That is the kind of story my Dad used to tell and I believed in everything he said-makes me smile with the memories.
ReplyDeleteOoo, if only bunnies came in paisley!! :D
ReplyDeleteThose colored chicks are so cute! My kids never believed that! :)
ReplyDeleteHo cute, Diana. I've never heard of colored chicks. Well, other than the marshmallow kind.
ReplyDeleteOh how I wanted one of those colored chicks when I was little. But we were city folks then so I never got anything other than a chocolate one.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a lot harder to pull the whole over kids eyes today, isn't it? I think I'm more gullible than they are!
children believe a lot of stuff...for some reasons, nowdays it seems that they are a little less "believers".
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I know I would have believed that the colored chicks came from colored eggs when I was a kid. I think in those days, I believed everything!
ReplyDeleteThose are some pretty eggs...folks get so fancy with them these days. Oh, to be a kid again!!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Cindy
awe they are so cute.. I would of picked the purple and or pink or mmm blue .. I would of called them all mine.. Back then I could of been a bit controlling LOL just ask my sister LOL .. just kidding.. anyways love the post love the eggs and at the end felt sorry for Ralph that chicken I named that bit the dust at the end with the stuffing...poor thang ... Hope that your having a blessed Easter holiday and Easter day ........ I call the week before holiday .. Any excuse to craft or easter up ... LOL ..Toodles
ReplyDeleteOh, lawd!!!! I so remember those poor colored chicks at the Ben Franklin Store where I grew up! I think I was told early on about the 'in vitro' coloring!!!
ReplyDeleteAre y'all thawing there yet???
Nancy
I have never seen dyed chicks!!..
ReplyDeleteI have never seen dyed chicks...I lived a sheltered childhood... LOL. They are cute!
ReplyDeleteYou have a naughty sense of humor, girl. I am still laughing. When you were saying you made sure you got the color with most chicks, I was think about Sweet Cheeks. You are also a naughty teacher cuz I know who (eggs) sweet cheeks on.
ReplyDeleteLove to all. Have a blessed Easter. He is risen!
Fluffed to stuffed ROFL!! I remember those dyed chicks from when I was a kid too. They sold them in a store in town and we loved to go see them. My dad would never let us buy one, since he knew they would grow into full-fledged chickens Living in a sub-division, we didn't have a place for chickens. Our neighbors weren't so smart however and always bought the poor little things each year. They'd play with them, then when they got bigger, their dumb dog would eat them! Those neighbors were weird, to say the least! LOL! Hugs, Leena
ReplyDeleteI remember those colored chickens at the feed store! I don't know where I thought they got that color. Just don't remember.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Hi Diana, Oh I just love this very colorful post. So Easterific!! I never saw dyed chicks!!
ReplyDeleteLove the silk eggs too and bunnies ~~ and well the stuffed chicken looks very yummy.
Wishing you a very Happy Easter!!
Hugs, CM
Oh my goodness! Did your mother really dye the chicks? How is that possible? Never, ever heard of this!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Those were darling colors. What a great thing to believe, why not..who wants to kill a kids spirit.
ReplyDeleteWe would get to pick out a colored chicken and they were so cute...but ended up being some of the meanest chicks in the barnyard when they got big. lol I love those little paisley bunnies. Why can't I make those? lol Sweet hugs!
ReplyDeletePoor little chicks. Who wants to be pink, yellow or blue?
ReplyDeleteOh, Diana!
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh m'dear! I am feeling rather guilty, though, about eating so much chicken. :-( Those coloured chicks were the cutest. I love the fabric you used in your bunnies! Happy Easter!
Hugs,
Linda at Beautiful Ideas
I believed everything I was told as a kid, I was so shocked when I discovered they told fibs, I was told that was wrong and why was it ok for them and not me.
ReplyDeleteMerle......i
Diana you surely brought memories for me!!! We used to get them also!! V
ReplyDeleteLOL ours usually went to the chicken coop, too.
ReplyDeleteHaha- just too cute.
ReplyDeleteLOL I had never seen a colored chick until in my 30's! LOL Well, from beginning to end they are a delight aren't they, what a gift they are. Happy Easter! :)
ReplyDeleteI still believe in colored chicks. We had them every Easter growing up. They were so cute. When they got big enough, we took them out to a farmer's for him to raise.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter.
Judy
I vote for stuffed..Not a fan of coloring chicks, cats or any other animal...They're cute when they're yellow..:)
ReplyDeleteLaughing and laughing...
ReplyDeletexo, T.
:) What a fun thing - coloring not only the eggs but also the chicks :)
ReplyDeleteYou had a wonderful childhood I would say! Oh that our kids would stay innocent and in the land of make-believe longer!
This cracked me up!!
ReplyDeleteI loved those colored chickens!! And we still decorate our Easter Eggs, then we have to decide how we will eat them later! I'm thinking deviled eggs and egg salad sandwiches.. wait. That's what we did last year!
I have missed your blog so much, you are such a breath of fresh air!
Hey Diana, just saw your feature as charming blog of the day over at Lynn's Shabby Story blog. Congrats my friend.
ReplyDeleteXO Celestina Marie
Oh my gosh this is so funny! What an imagination your mother had...smile... Now I know where you get your fun loving attitude! What a blessing!
ReplyDeleteSince we raised chickens, they were always yellow to us..lol and yes, eventually they were stuffed! lol
Blessings,
Gert
Ok that last pic was kinda gross. LOL! I've never seen colored chicks until just recently. We didn't do that. But I used to believe I could I could "lock in freshness" with an egg like the commercials did. I cracked several eggs and oranges looking for the latches to fix them again. Duh! :)))
ReplyDeleteLOL! at the Fluffed to Stuffed! I love your sense of humor! I really loved the colored chickens... so cute ! But maybe just for one day! The silk dyed eggs are great, I would like to try that one year.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet story! That last picture..oh my!
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful post, Diana. Isn't it funny the stories we are told when we are young? I love the first picture of the colored chicks heeheehee, they are adorable. Did you really have dyed chicks roaming around?
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter, dear friend of mine.
~Sheri at Red Rose Alley
I remember those pastel chicks, too!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you this Easter.
What a cute story! Somehow, you've made eating chicken less appealing now. Thanks alot! LOL!
ReplyDeleteOh my, My hand got tired scrolling down, 58 comments! I won't even try LOL I love my girls, I can't eat them... I believe in the Easter Bunny :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Roxy
Oh, I got a colored chick too! I, too, thought the egg color matched the baby chick! Cute story! I hope your Easter is filled with many blessings!
ReplyDeleteToo too funny. I do love those colored chicks. They are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh my you make me laugh! Those colored chickies are so cute though, how could you not want to believe?
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring!!
Are you telling me someone actually dyed those chicks? Never heard of it. It seems awfully time consuming and somehow just not right! Since I turned my chickens into pets I have a little trouble with roasting a grocery store chicken. It's kind of like putting a cat on a skewer to me now. Remind me to never get turkeys!
ReplyDeleteI can remember seeing chicken coloured like this diana!!when we lived in the middle east the children used to get them as gifts from the market and bring them into school for show and tell!! i always wondered how they got that way and if they stayed that way! now i know! We have a dilema here tho too! We did have two chickens and one was broody so we got some babies for her which she happily adopted. But now we have five big chicks and its too much! so my husband wants to cook them but i just cant do it!!! and i dont want to seperate the babies from their mumma!!! we will have to work something out!!!!
ReplyDeletehope you have a great easter diana! blessings and lots of love xxxx
Oh you silly thing! The only thing more scandalous at Easter than a stuffed chicken is eating rabbit on Easter. And yes, I have done it.
ReplyDeleteHavin' stuffed chicken tonight!! Just pulled her out actually and she's not done yet. Underestimated how long she would need to cook w/ the stuffing. Kids are starving!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that one but I am going to hopefully remember to share with my grandkids some day!!
