Chickens For Sale Today!
They are colored and dyed
And my Mother lied
Cuz she said they were born that way.
Yes-It's true.
I grew up in the land of make-believe.
When Easter rolled around on the farm
we were presented with
rainbow colored chickens.
They came kind of ratty looking but
after a bath they looked like this.

colored Easter eggs.
I believed it.
I believed it long past the early
years of gullibility.
I guess I thought they came from
eggs like these.
My brother, Charlie, and I each
eggs like these.
picked a color and those were the
chickens we called ours.

I always counted to make sure
that "my color" covered the
most chickens.
Yes.I.Did.
After a few weeks their color wore off....
but by then so had our interest in them
and they went into the hen house.
I teach my grandchildren the same thing.
But they are all "onto" me.
How did today's kids get so smart?
Hmmmmm....
So......do you think if I left these
silk dyed eggs
lying around

Oh- yes- to be able to go back in time
and believe in the unbelievable again.
But...reality being what it is....
I now know what happened
to those sweet little
FLUFFED COLORED CHICKENS
that I cuddled and loved.

ReplyDeleteDiana, I remember when colorful chicks were sold at Easter. The Hy-Line (chicken company) Would give free babies chicks to anyone who wanted one. Mom would take all us kids to get one...then we took them home to raise and eat. Yes, we named them , then ate them when they were big enough to make our family a meal. I wasn't around, reading blogs when Charlie passed, I read it much later. So sorry for your loss. I am guessing that remembering sweet times with him is painful & sweet at the same time. My deepest sympathy.

I saw those colored chicks as a child. They are so cute. Dying chicks is probably not allowed today. I'm sure it's not considered entirely humane by the animal rights groups. But then, neither is stuffing them. I wonder how much longer we'll be allowed to do that?

ReplyDeleteHi Diana! Coloured Easter eggs and egg hunts were not part of our traditions. I don't remember any French Canadian families ever doing that. Perhaps the English Canadians did it. I don't know. I lived in a French neighbourhood and went to a French school. All my friends were French. We always had an Easter basket when we woke up Easter morning and were told it was from the Bunny Rabbit and I believed it for a while. I also once was given a cardboard box filled with real live chicks that had been dyed. I think I had them for a day and they disappeared somehow. I can't remember what I was told because I was too young. But, I do remember them.

awe they are so cute.. I would of picked the purple and or pink or mmm blue .. I would of called them all mine.. Back then I could of been a bit controlling LOL just ask my sister LOL .. just kidding.. anyways love the post love the eggs and at the end felt sorry for Ralph that chicken I named that bit the dust at the end with the stuffing...poor thang ... Fluffed to stuffed ROFL!! I remember those dyed chicks from when I was a kid too. They sold them in a store in town and we loved to go see them. My dad would never let us buy one, since he knew they would grow into full-fledged chickens Living in a sub-division, we didn't have a place for chickens. Our neighbors weren't so smart however and always bought the poor little things each year. They'd play with them, then when they got bigger, their dumb dog would eat them! Those neighbors were weird, to say the least! LOL! Hugs, Leena

Ok that last pic was kinda gross. LOL! I've never seen colored chicks until just recently. We didn't do that. But I used to believe I could I could "lock in freshness" with an egg like the commercials did. I cracked several eggs and oranges looking for the latches to fix them again. Duh! :)))

Are you telling me someone actually dyed those chicks? Never heard of it. It seems awfully time consuming and somehow just not right! Since I turned my chickens into pets I have a little trouble with roasting a grocery store chicken. It's kind of like putting a cat on a skewer to me now. Remind me to never get turkeys!
ReplyDeleteI can remember seeing chicken coloured like this diana!!when we lived in the middle east the children used to get them as gifts from the market and bring them into school for show and tell!! i always wondered how they got that way and if they stayed that way! now i know! We have a dilema here tho too! We did have two chickens and one was broody so we got some babies for her which she happily adopted. But now we have five big chicks and its too much! so my husband wants to cook them but i just cant do it!!! and i dont want to seperate the babies from their mumma!!! we will have to work something out!!!!

Oh you silly thing! The only thing more scandalous at Easter than a stuffed chicken is eating rabbit on Easter. And yes, I have done it.
