Remember Charlies Angels? Well-Charlie IS an Angel....

A year ago today my daughter, Mimi,
and I were driving through a blinding snow storm
trying to reach Pennsylvania before
my brother, Charlie,
went into surgery.

He had gone in a couple of days prior and thought
he had a bladder infection.
This is a man that was never sick a day in his life.
As it turned out, they never did do surgery.
He had gone from hale and hearty to
desperately ill in a few days time.
We got there on February 4th  and he was
very ill.
The dreaded words came from the doctor-
Stage Four Cancer.
Incurable.
No treatment available for this type of cancer.
He died the next day.
February 5th, 2013.

Even now it is surreal.
Even now I think I will pick up the phone
and hear his
half-laugh saying,
"Hello, Sister- Dearest"
(a take off on Mommy Dearest- don't ask)
Even now, I can hear him telling me
how happy he was,
how much he loved the girl he had married,
how much he loved his children and grandchildren.
He was one of the kindest souls I have ever known.

So, when Mimi invited me
to spend a couple of days
with her and her boys
while her hubby was out of town
I thought it was fitting to go.
And, as we mourn losing Charlie,
we celebrate the fact
that she is carrying another little life around.
Another little girl to love.
Charlie loved Mimi.
She reminded him of our side of the family
with her curly red hair and her blue eyes.
He would have loved this baby, too.

You know who else he loved when he was young?
He loved Farrah Fawcett.
I think he may have had a poster or two
of her somewhere.
Do you suppose that my brother, Charlie,
finally got to see a REAL angel up close?
Yep- Wouldn't that be grand?
My brother, Charlie, meeting up with one of
Charlie's Angels!
Imagine That!

I will be gone for a couple of days...
remembering and thinking.....
 AND thankful
for the life I am living.
Be back soon!

I know this is not an anniversary that you're happy to have, but at least you are able to look back at all the good memories you have of him. I still can't believe how quickly he died after getting diagnosed! At least he didn't have to suffer for a long time. So many do. Enjoy this time with your family.

Diana...my family also has a Charlie as an angel. Four years ago last month my brother-in-law Charlie, my beautiful sister's husband, was diagnoses with stage 4 lung cancer. He too was never ever sick. Ten moths later he passed away at the age of just 54. He was the kind of guy that when you met him for the first time it was like meeting again with an old friend, he was that easy going and likable. He is now one of our guardian angels. I will pray for your family and brother Charlie...there must be something about that name because it seems to be synonymous with wonderfully loving people. He will be there when Mimi's little girl arrives...of that I am sure.
Looking forward to your return.

I wonder if those angels have guns in heaven. I mean... if not, how are they going to pose for pictures? And really... I'm sure Farrah won't be the only angel Charlie gets to hang around with. He's in paradise and there are angels everywhere. And they're all beautiful! But really - it's kind of hard to believe that a year has gone by.

Jettie said...

I'm sure he did get to see her, right after he shook Jesus' hand and someone gave him his halo. He's looking down today, and smiling at his sis, who he knows loved him dearly. Enjoy your time of reflexion, and if you find mispelled wordss blame it on my pain meds. Love ya.

Yep, he is with Farrah-probably laughing etc. Have a great time with your family.

Oh, Diana, I know your loss. Brothers are our "first" best friends and when they leave this earth, they leave so much behind. I cherish my memories of those happy times together. I also cherish our disagreements, for we always knew that we would always be brother and sister forever and that bond was greater than anything else. Celebrate his life and all the wonderful times you shared for his memory remains in your heart.

I am so sorry for your loss!! That C word is horrible!! I'm glad that you had that day with him! I'm sure it was horrible to lose him so quickly like that...but on the other hand...my dad found out about his a year ago...and he lingers on...and I say it that way...simply because he is ready to go...and suffers every day...it is so hard to watch someone decline before your eyes like that! I guess I sometimes wish we would have had one day...to tell him how much we loved him...and then let him go on to be in a much better place...rather to see him suffering. Either way...death is never easy...it leaves such am emptiness behind!! God bless your family!!!
